FULTON, Mo. – In the American Midwest Conference Men's Soccer Game of the Week, the William Woods University men's soccer team played No. 17 Columbia College to a 1-1 double overtime draw on Tuesday Night at Firley Field.
The tie snapped the Owls winning streak, however, the Owls have not lost a contest since, September 1st.
Alberto Pitarch scored the game tying goal for the Owls with 1:48 left in the contest to force overtime.
WWU returns to action on Saturday, October 14th when they host Lyon College at Firley Field. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
Game Flow
WWU looked to get on the board early in the contest as
David Marshall had a shot from the top of the box go high of goal. Four minutes later, the Cougars got onto the board as Nick Horne scored the goal for Columbia.
William Woods continued to pressure the Cougars defense as they had shots but the Owls could not get a clear look at the goal. The Owls kept the pressure up on the offensive end, but the Cougars defense continued to get in front of the Owls shots. WWU went into halftime trailing 1-0.
The Owls came out in the second half and
Roberto Duro Sanchez had a shot on goal that Nicolau Neto saved. A minute later,
Darren Wilson had a shot on goal that Neto saved.
The Cougars had two scoring chances early in the second half but Cable recorded two huge saves keeping it a 1-0 contest.
WWU's offense continued to attack the Cougars but the Owls could not score. The Owls had shots going wide, high or blocked. Columbia looked to extend its lead with 5:12 left in regulation as Casey Barlett-Scott had a shot but Cable made the save.
Running out of time the Owls
Victor Faure sent a ball into the box where he found
Alberto Pitarch who scored with 1:48 left in the contest, tying the game and forcing overtime.
Early in overtime, the Owls continued play as Faure had a shot go wide, and Wilson had a shot blocked. With 4:17 left in the first overtime, Wilson had a shot on goal that Neto saved. Columbia had two shots in the overtime period, by Joey Koetting, but both went high or wide. The game remained tied heading to a second overtime.
The second overtime started like the first as the Owls had shots but could not put them on goal. Faure had the best scoring chance as the Owls had Neto out of position but the Cougars defense came up big making a save. With 4:11 left in the second overtime,
Matheus Schmid had a shot that Neto saved. Columbia had one scoring chance when Juan Pablo Agredo had a shot that was saved by Woods.
The Owl and Cougars played to a 1-1 draw. With the draw the Owls go to 9-2-3 on the season and 6-0-1 in the AMC.
