FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's soccer team scored two goals, one in each half, to upset No. 5 Columbia College in American Midwest Conference action, on Tuesday evening at Firley Field.
The win on Tuesday was the first win for the Owls over Columbia since November 10th, 2014 when the Owls won, 1-0.
Shelby Scanlan scored both goals for the Owls. WWU had three shots on goal in the contest. The win for the Owls is its third straight.
WWU returns to action on Saturday, October 14th when they host Lyon College at Firley Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
Game Flow
Columbia and the Owls came out trading blows early in the contest, Lucy Kingsley had a shot on goal with 36:22 left in the first half, but
Rebecca Sturgess made the save. After the first Cougar shot the Owls had its first shot four minutes later when
Shelby Scanlan had a shot on goal that was saved.
Columbia continued to put pressure on the Owls defense but Sturgess stood tall in the back line.
With 23:46 left in the first half, Scanlan had a shot go wide of goal. Two minutes later,
Claire Stark found
Jenna Vogt who found Scanlan who scored her first goal of the game. Scanlan's goal put the Owls ahead, 1-0.
The Cougars had six more shots on goal in the contest and the Owls made saves on each of them. WWU took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Columbia tied the game in the early in the second half. Molly Klien scored for the Cougars tying the game at 1-1 with 39:39 left.
WWU would not trail for long as they answered right back.
Claire Stark found Scanlan less than a minute after the Columbia goal putting the Owls ahead, 2-1. This would be the last shot for the Owls in the contest.
The Cougars offense continued to pressure the Owls defense as they had 16 shots in the second half but could only score on goal. Sturgess made six saves in the second half. With 4:21 left in the half, Sarah Taylor of the Cougars hit the post keeping and the Owls cleared the ball. Columbia had one more scoring chance with 23 seconds left, but Taylor missed the shot high.
The Owls came away with a 2-1 victory over No. 5 Columbia College. The win for the Owls is its third straight victory.
