COLUMBIA, Mo. – The William Woods University women's basketball team claimed its first win of the 2017-18 season with a 73-56 victory over Culver-Stockton College on Friday afternoon. This game was part of the Cougar Classic.
The Owls had three players score in double figures in the contest including 24 points from Jasmine Brown. Sommer Burgard scored 13 points and Peyton Greenlee added 10 for the Owls. WWU shot 42.6 percent from the floor in the contest.
WWU returns to action on Saturday, November 4th when they play Mount Mercy University at the Cougar Classic in Columbia, Missouri. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
Game Flow
The Owls and Wildcats were locked in a tight battle in the first quarter and a three-pointer by Bailey Rollins put the Owls ahead by four, 7-3. Culver-Stockton battled back taking a 10-9 lead, however the Owls responded and grew its lead to eight, 20-12 after a two pointer by Burgard. WWU held a seven-point lead, 22-15, after one quarter of play.
WWU stretched its lead to 12 points, 29-17, after a jumper by Brown with 8:10 to go in the first half. Later in the quarter, the Owls lead was extended to 18 points, 37-19, after a fast break layup by Brown. Culver-Stockton continued to battle, and the lead was down to ten, 39-29, with 26 second to go in the half. WWU took a 12-point lead, 41-29, into halftime.
Both teams traded baskets in the third quarter. Peyton Greenlee put the Owls ahead by 15 points, 49-34, with 7:15 left in the quarter. WWU grew their lead to as many as 24 points, 59-35, late in the quarter when Jess Schmidt hit a three pointer. WWU led 59-37 after three quarters of play.
WWU battled and the Owls continued to lead by 22 points, 61-39, after a Katharyn Nolan layup. Culver-Stockton got the Owls lead down to 18 before the Owls stretched the lead back to 23 points after a Brown three pointer. WWU continued to hold onto a double-figure lead and came away with a 73-56 victory.
