FAYETTE, Mo. – The William Woods University men's basketball team was defeated by Central Methodist University, 70-65, on Tuesday night.
WWU led by four at halftime but could not hold onto the lead in the second half. Darrien Dickey and DaShaun Stark led the Owls with 12 points in the contest. WWU shot 36.1 percent from the floor in the contest.
WWU returns to action on Thursday, November 9th when they play Culver-Stockton College at Anderson Arena. This will be the Owls first home game of the season.
Game Flow
WWU came out struggling to score early as they were held scoreless for the first three minutes and 45 seconds of the contest. During the stretch, the Eagles came out and scored seven points taking a 7-0 lead. After trailing by seven, the Owls score the next four points of the contest and trailed, 7-4.
Central Methodist against stretched its lead out to nine points, 13-4, after a Frankie Burden jumper in the paint. After trailing by nine, WWU trimmed the lead down to two, 18-16, after a Dickey Darrien jumper in the paint.
Dickey gave the Owls its first lead with 5:39 left in the first half after a jumper in the paint. The game remained close for the rest of the first half as both teams traded leads over the next five minutes of the half. Jason Walker put the Owls ahead by six, with one-minute left in the half. The Eagles made a bucket before half and WWU led by four, 35-31, at halftime.
WWU stretched its lead back to six points, 37-31, after a Brandon Vice jumper in the paint to get the second half scoring going. Central Methodist would not go away as they trimmed the lead down to one, 40-39, after a Bo Burkhart three-pointer with 14:57 left in the contest.
William Woods continued to lead until the 12;13 mark in the second half, when Armon Williams had a fast break layup that tied the game at 45-45. After Williams tied the game, both teams traded lead until WWU built a four-point lead, 55-51, after a stark jumper.
The lead did not last long as the Eagles tied the contest and both teams continued to trade lead. With 3:50 left in the contest the Owls and Eagles were tied at 60-60. CMU and WWU continued trading baskets and a jumper by Vice tied the game at 65-65 with 1:12 left in the contest. However, those would be the last points for the Owls as the Eagles closed out the game scoring the final five points. WWU was defeated, 70-65, by Central Methodist.
