Women’s Basketball Falls to Southwest Baptist, 78-69

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The William Woods University women's basketball team was defeated by Southwest Baptist University, 78-69, on Saturday afternoon in an exhibition contest.
 
Peyton Greenlee led the Owls with 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Jasmine Brown followed with 16, Bailey Rollins chipped in 13 and Hannah Bland scored 11 to round out the double-figure scorers. WWU shot 46.2 percent from the floor in the contest.
 
WWU returns to action on Tuesday, January 2nd when they travel to Belleville, Illinois to face Lindenwood University – Belleville. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
 
Game Flow
The first quarter went back and forth as each team answered each other as both teams opened the contest with back-to-back threes. With the Owls down 9-8, Tori Nesslage hit a three pointer, sparking a 13-2 run for the Owls. WWU led by 10, 21-11, after a Peyton Greenlee three-pointer. WWU led 23-16 after the first quarter of play.
 
With the lead cut down to five, opening the second quarter, the Owls scored the next five points stretching its lead back to 10, 28-18, after a Greenlee three. After Greenlee's three, the Bearcats slowly chipped away at the Owls lead. WWUs lead was down to one, 34-33, after a Mikayla Putt layup. Southwest Baptist tied the game at 37-37 with 1:33 left before halftime. A layup by Hannah Bland and a free throw by Jasmine Brown put the Owls ahead, 41-39. The Owls allowed the Bearcats to score one more point in the quarter and WWU led 41-40 at halftime.
 
The Owls and Bearcats came out trading baskets in the second half and WWU led by four, 50-46, after a Jasmine Brown layup with 5:05 left in the third quarter. Southwest Baptist scored 10 of the last 15 points of the third quarter and led the Owls 56-55 after three quarters of play.
 
After trading baskets to open the fourth quarter, the Owls trailed the Bearcats 60-59 after a Greenlee layup. However, Southwest Baptist followed with an 11-0 run over the next two minutes of the game taking a 71-59 lead over the Owls with 3:35 left in the contest. Trailing by 13, WWU scored the next five points on a jumper by Hannah Bland and a three by Baily Rollins, which cut the lead down to eight, 74-66. This would be as close as the Owls would get as they dropped the contest, 78-69, to Southwest Baptist.
