PARKVILLE, Mo. – The William Woods University women's basketball team won its sixth straight contest on Saturday afternoon as the Owls defeated Park University, 74-56, in American Midwest Conference action.
The Owls had a trio of players in double-figures in the contest with
Jasmine Brown leading the way for WWU with 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting.
Kennedy Volkart came off the bench and scored 16 points, on 7-of-9 shooting.
Peyton Greenlee rounded out the double-figure scorers with 13 points. Volkart led the Owls with eight rebounds. WWU shot 49.2 for the contest.
WWU returns to action on Tuesday, February 14th when they travel to Belleville, Illinois to face Lindenwood University-Belleville in American Midwest Conference action. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
Game Flow
The Owls came out strong in the first quarter of the contest, as they scored nine of the first 11 points.
Kelsey Scherder hit a three-pointer putting WWU ahead, 9-2, with 7:19 left in the first quarter. Two minutes later a jumper by Scherder in the paint put the Owls ahead by 11, 16-5. WWU continued to hold onto double-figure lead and after the first quarter of play, WWU led Park, 24-14.
The Pirates started coming back opening the second quarter and after an old fashion three-point play by Kianna Lane, the Pirates had the lead down to nine, 26-17. Park continued to battle back and a jumper by Camille Buttorff put the Pirates down five, 28-23. A three-pointer by Greenlee put the Owls back ahead by eight, 31-23, before the Pirates cut the lead down to four points, 31-27. WWU held the Pirates scoreless for the final 2:30 of the half and stretched its lead to seven, 34-27, heading into halftime.
William Woods came out of halftime and grew the lead back to double-figures after five straight points by Greenlee. A Greenlee three-pointer put the Owls ahead by 11, 41-30. Greenlee's five points was the start of an 9-0 run that put the Owls ahead, 45-30. William Woods continued to stretch its lead and held a 16-point lead, 53-37, after three quarters of play.
WWU continued to stretch its lead and grew the lead to 20 points, 59-39, after a
Kennedy Volkart fastbreak layup. The Owls did not let the Pirates back in the game and later in the quarter the lead was up to 23, 66-43, with 4:27 left in the contest. The Pirates got the Owls lead down to 18 late in the fourth quarter but could not get any closer. WWU came away with an 18 point, 74-56, victory over Park.
