Softball Splits Doubleheader in Battle of Fulton

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University softball team split its non-conference doubleheader with Westminster College on Thursday afternoon. WWU dropped game one, 7-1, before rebounding taking game two, 14-7.
 
WWU returns to action on Sunday, March 5th when they play Ohio Valley University and Roosevelt University at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
 
Game One
Game Flow

After the Owls, could not get anything going in the first inning, the Westminster scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. Westminster scored after an error by the Owls putting the Blue Jays ahead, 1-0. Westminster grew the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Callie Collier hit an RBI double to left center for one run and Erica Burney collected another RBI in the inning for Westminster.
 
Westminster continued to add to their lead in game one. In the bottom of the fourth inning the Blue Jays Burney drew a bases loaded walk scoring one. Mackenzie Myers singled up the middle scoring another and WWU trailed 5-0 after four innings of play.
 
WWU scored its lone run in the top of the fifth inning. Alexi Cavins singled to left field and Lindsey Van Tress followed with a double to left center putting two runners on. Hannah Campbell loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch. However, the next two Owls were retired and Beth Begemann reached on an error scoring one and Van Tress was throwing out at the plate and after four and half innings, WWU trailed 5-1.
 
The Blue Jays added two more runs, one in the fifth and sixth inning taking a 7-1 lead. The Owls offense could not get anything else going in the contest and the Owls dropped game one, 7-1 to Westminster.

Game Two
Game Flow

William Woods offense came out scoring in the second game. With two outs and two runners on base, Alli Massey singled to shortstop loading the bases. Ari Arnold drew a bases loaded walk to put the Owls ahead, 1-0.
 
After the Owls kept the Blue Jays off the board in the first, WWU scored its second run of the contest in the second inning. With a runner on third base, Hannah Campbell grounded out scoring one and putting the Owls ahead, 2-0.
 
Westminster came back and tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. Brittany Hodge singled home one in the inning and Collier followed with another single tying the game at 2-2. Westminster took the lead in the bottom of the third inning when they scored five runs on four hits and took a 7-2 lead over the Owls after three innings of play.
 
William Woods scored one in the top of the fourth inning. With a runner on second base, Hannah Campbell doubled to center scoring one. The Owls left two runners on base and the found themselves down 7-3.
 
The Owls bats came to life in the top of the fifth inning as they scored six runs in the inning. Jessica Bradfisch singled one run in in the inning and Sierra Jacques followed by driving in one on a Blue Jay error. Campbell drove in another run in the contest on a ground out. Darcie Deeping collected an RBI and Brailee Schulte had drove in two on a double and WWU led 9-7 after four and a half innings.
 
The game remained 9-7 until the top of the seventh inning as they scored five runs in the inning. The Owls got it started with a home run by Hillary Hentges. Alli Massy drew a bases loaded walk scoring another and Bradfisch added three more in the inning on a double putting the Owls ahead 14-7.
 
Westminster put two runs on base in the bottom of the seventh but the Owls would not let them get anything going and the Owls came away with a 14-7 victory in game two.
