MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The William Woods University softball team opened up its 2017 Spring Break with two victories at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Owls pitching staff dominated the day as they recorded two shutouts on the day and 16 strikeouts on the day.

William Woods returns to action on Monday, March 6th when they play University of Rio Grande (Ohio) at 8:30 a.m. CT. Later in the day the Owls play the Lakers of Roosevelt University at 4:30 p.m. CT.

Game Flow
After a scoreless first inning, the Owls were able to generate a run in the second inning after
Beth Begemann reached by hit by pitch.
Alli Massey grounded out and on the play Begemann advanced to second. Teammate
Madison McCormick reached on a Fighting Scots error, putting runners on the corner.
Jessica Bradfisch then singled to third base, scoring Begemann, putting the Owls ahead 1-0.
The Owls and the Fighting Scots would then go back and forth going 1, 2, 3 until the sixth when the Owls would string hits together to score another run. Begeman hit a leadoff double and was advanced to third on a ground out by Massey. McCormick then singled to third, scoring Begemann, growing WWU's lead to 2-0.
The Owls would then finish off the Fighting Scots in the seventh.
Ari Arnold led off the inning with a single. Campbell reached on an error and advanced Arnold to second, putting runners on first and second. Begemann then hits another timely shot with a double to left field, scoring Campbell and Arnold, growing the Owls lead to, 4-0.

Bre Logan kept the Fighting Scots bats quiet for the majority of the contest. Logan only allowed Ohio Valley to collected four hits in the contest, two of which game in the seventh inning but they could not get a run across. WWU came away with a 4-0 win and Logan picked up her third win of the season, and struck out eight Fighting Scots in the contest.

Game Flow
The Owls and the Lakers locked up in a pitcher dual as neither team scored a run until the top of the ninth inning of play. Both teams were unable to string hits together to generate any sort of action offensively.
The Owls threatened in the top of the fourth when
Dacrie Depping hit a leadoff single, and advanced to second with the help of
Brailee Schulte. Begemann would reach base by a hit by pitch and
Hillary Hentges would reach on a walk, loading the bases. The Owls would unfortunately end the inning scoreless.
Even with the Owls offense struggling to get timely hits, Owls starter
Madison Ausfahl kept the Lakers bats quiet. Ausfahl pitched a complete game one-hitter and had a no-hitter going until the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Owls and the Lakers would then go into extra innings leading up to an international tie breaker. Massey would hit a triple and take advantage of a Laker bobble, ultimately scoring on the Laker error putting the Owls ahead, 1-0.
That would be enough for the Owls as Ausfahl retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Owls would come away with a 1-0 victory, its second victory of the day.
