Owls Softball Sweeps AMC Foe Hannibal-LaGrange

FULTON, Mo. – For the second straight American Midwest Conference opponent, the William Woods University Softball team came away with a doubleheader sweep. On Tuesday afternoon, the Owls swept visiting Hannibal-LaGrange University. WWU took game one, 2-0, and game two, 8-3.

The Owls return to action on Friday, March 31st when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri to face Harris-Stowe State University. First pitch of the AMC contest is set to begin at 2 p.m.
 
Game One
Game Flow

The Owls defense came out strong in the first game when the Trojans threatened on the base paths in the second inning. With runners on first and third, Oliva Imoff threw out a base stealer and Allison Waskow got the next hitter to ground out to end the inning.
 
In the bottom of the third, a triple by Hannah Campbell would spark the Owl offense. Campbell would come into score on a sacrifice fly by Dacrie Depping and the Owls would take a 1-0 lead over the Trojans.
 
In the top of the fourth, Jenna Duckworth singled up the middle. On the next batter, Olivia Imhoff would then show off her agility by hopping out from behind the plate on a bunt and throwing out the lead run trying to advance to second base. The Owls middle infield combined to get the second out of the inning and on ground ball Depping tagged the runner going to second to end the inning.
 
The Owls would strike again in the bottom of the fifth when Campbell would start the offense again this time with a double. Depping would then hit through the left side of the infield moving Campbell to third base. However, the Owls could not get Campbell across the plate and the Owls took a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning.
 
It was not until the bottom of the sixth that the Owls would score again. Alli Massey reached on Trojan error, and Regan Wilde would come in to pinch run. Arnold would then hit a single, that drove home Wilde from second base putting WWU ahead, 2-0.
 
The Trojans could not get anything going in the sixth inning and the Owls would come away with a 2-0 victory in game one.

Game Two
Game Flow

Early Owl error in the first inning put Trojan runner on, and two batters later, Haley Zeier grounded out scoring one and putting the Trojans ahead, 1-0.
 
In the bottom of the first, the Owls answer back. With a timely Trojan error, the Owls would occupy first and second. Depping scored on a Madison McCormick single. Two batters later, Massey would advance runners to scoring position and another Trojan error would score Brailee Schulte, putting the Owls ahead, 2-1.
 
The top of the second would bring another Trojan home, tying the game at two apiece. Jennifer Harness tripled to lead off the inning and she came into score on a Melissa Stenborg sacrifice fly.
 
The Trojans would threaten again in the top of the third when they loaded the bases with two outs. After a pitching change for the Owls, Sierra Jacques came in and got Harness to line out to short stop to end the inning.
 
The Owls broke the game open in the fourth inning of play. Lindsey Van Tress doubled to lead off the inning and she advanced to third on a sac bunt. Campbell drove her in with a single up the middle. Campbell than stole second base and advanced to third on a ground out. Brailee Schulte walked to put two runners on for the Owls and McCormick singled scoring one. Alli Massey followed with a double scoring two on the play and putting the Owls ahead, 6-2.
 
Hannibal-LaGrange got one run back in the top of the fifth inning but the Owls added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ari Arnold came up with the clutch hit as she singled, which drove in two putting the Owls ahead, 8-3.
 
Hannibal-LaGrange could not get anything going in the top of the seventh inning as Jacques sat the Trojans down in order and the Owls came away with an 8-3 win in game two.
