Softball Splits on Third Day of Myrtle Beach Tournament

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – For the second time during the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, the William Woods University softball team split its two games. In the first game of the day, the Owls were defeated by NCAA Division II Malone (Ohio), 4-3, before rebounding to defeat Waldorf (Iowa), 8-7.
 
William Woods returns to action March 9th when they play Ohio Christian at 8:30 a.m. CT and Roosevelt (Ill.) at 12:30 p.m. CT on its final day of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.

Game Flow

Malone jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on the Owls as Mikayla Folwer led off the game with a double. She came into score on a Caley Ritts double putting the Pioneers ahead. However, Malone's lead did not last long as the Owls got to starter Isabelle Roberts in the first. Hannah Campbell singled and then stole second base putting herself in scoring position. She advanced to third base on a ground out and scored on a Brailee Schulte sacrifice fly tying the game at 1-1.
 
After each team scored once in the first, neither team scored again until the bottom of the third inning. Like the first, Campbell reached base and then stole second base. For the second time in the contest, Schutle drove home Campbell putting the Owls head 2-1. WWU grew the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jessica Bradfisch led off the inning with a solo home run.
 
Malone's answered back in the top of the fifth inning. Madison Corrcik led off the inning for the Pioneers by getting hit by a pitch. She scored on the next batter when Ashley Beck doubled. Caley Ritts singled home Beck tying the game at 3-3. The Pioneers loaded the bases and Kennedy Johnson came into score on a wild pitch putting the Pioneers ahead, 4-3.
 
The Owls did not threaten again in the contest and would drop its first game of the day, 4-3.

Game Flow

WWU's offense came out swinging in the bottom of the first inning. Campbell singled and stole second base. After the next two Owls were retired, Campbell scored on a Beth Begemann single putting the Owls ahead, 1-0. Amanda Bouchey followed with a double putting runners on second and third. Hillary Hentges collected a two run RBI single extending the Owls lead to 3-0.
 
The Warriors offense started to come to life in the top of the third inning. With runners on second and third, Hattie Hupke hit a sacrifice fly scoring one. Waldorf added one more in the inning and the Owls lead was down to one, 3-2.
 
William Woods grew the lead back to two runs in the bottom of the third. Dacrie Depping was on third base with one out, and Begemann drove home Depping with a sacrifice fly putting the Owls ahead, 4-2.
 
Again, the Warriors trimmed the lead down to one, 4-3, and the Owls responded. In the bottom of the fourth, the Owls grew its lead to 6-3. Lindsay Van Tress doubled and Van Tress scored on a Campbell single to extend the Owls lead.
 
Waldorf would not go away as they scored one in the top of the fifth inning on a Kennedy Vinchattle home run. After holding the Owls scoreless, the Warriors offense came back up and came to life. In the sixth inning, the Warriors scored three runs on four hits and they took a 7-6 lead into the bottom half of the inning.
 
The Owls did not let Waldorf hold onto the lead for every long. With two outs, the Owls offense clicked as Van Tress doubled to get the Owls started. Campbell and Bradfisch walked to load the bases and Schulte singled home two putting the Owls ahead, 8-7.
 
Bre Logan, who came in during the sixth inning, closed the door for the Owls as she struck out the first two Warriors of the inning and got the third to fly out to third base and the Owls defeated the Warriors, 8-7.
