Baseball Takes Two From Hannibal-LaGrange

HANNIBAL, Mo. – The William Woods University Baseball team swept its American Midwest Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon against Hannibal-LaGrange University. The Owls took game one, 8-0 and game two, 10-4.
 
On the day, the Owls outscored the Trojans, 18-4. WWU collected 27 hits in the doubleheader, led by Konrad Kemper and Tyler Cunningham, who both had five hits on the afternoon.
 
WWU and Hannibal-LaGrange close out its three-game set on Saturday, April 22nd. The Trojans and Owls will play a single nine inning contest starting at 12 p.m.
 
Game One
Game Flow

Pitching was the story line to start the first game of the doubleheader on Friday as neither teams' offense could get anything going in the first four innings of play. Owls starter Ryan Schmidt and Trojans starter David Evans combined to only allow three hits through four innings of play.
 
William Woods broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning. Glen DesBouillons singled up the middle and Josh Nicol advanced him to second on a sacrifice bunt. He moved to third on an Anthony Davison ground out and come into score on a Tyler Bracht single putting the Owls ahead 1-0.
 
It looked as if Hannibal-LaGrange would get something going in the bottom of the fifth inning off Schmidt. With two runners on, Joel Reynozo drew a walk to load the bases. That would be the last batter Schmidt would face as the Owls went to the pen. Ryan Furtney came in and got Victor Bautista to ground into a double play ending the inning.
 
The game remained 1-0 until the top of the seventh inning of play. The Owls offense exploded for seven runs on eight hits in the inning. Glen DesBouillons came up with a two run RBI single, Alex St. Pierre collected an RBI single, Ryan Phillips had a two run RBI single, Tyler Cunningham had an RBI single and Konrad Kemper picked up the last RBI in the inning for the Owls. Heading to the bottom of the seventh, the Owls led 8-0.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, the Trojans collected one hit off reliever Ryan Furtney as Lane Thebeau led off with a single. The next batter flew out and Furtney struck out the final two batters and the Owls came away with an 8-0 victory in game one.

Game Two
Game Flow

After a scoreless first inning, the Owls got on the board in the second inning. With two outs and a runner on first, Tyler Bracht singled to centerfield. On the play, St. Pierre went to third and came around to score when a Trojans throw. On the throw to get St. Pierre, Bracht advanced to third. He came into score on a single by Nolan Aherin.
 
After a 1-2-3 bottom of the second inning, the Owls offense came back to life. Tyler Cunningham singled with one out and then stole second base. With two-outs and Cunningham on second base, Matt Priest came up with a single to right-center scoring one and putting the Owls ahead, 3-0.
 
Hannibal-LaGrange scored its first run of the contest in the bottom of the third inning. Lane Thebeau singled and advanced to second on an error. He came into score on a Chase Feucht wild pitch trimming the owls lead to two, 3-1.
 
William Woods grew its lead back to three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Josh Nicol doubled with one out to get the Owls going. St. Pierre came into courtesy run for Nicol, and came into score when Tyler Bracht reached on a Trojan error.
 
The Trojans continued to battle and reach base of Chase Feucht. In the bottom of the fourth, with one out and a runner on first, Feucht gave up back-to-back singles loading the bases. Hannibal-LaGrange would score a run on an Owls error. With the bases still loaded, Feucht settled down and got the next two hitters out and the Owls led 4-2, after four innings of play.
 
The Owls bats continued to be hot as they scored four runs on four hits in the top of the fifth inning. With runners on second and third, Priest grounded out scoring one and putting the Owls ahead, 5-2. With two outs, Jansen Smith singled scoring one and extending the Owls lead. Nicol followed with a walk putting two runners on. Tyler Bracht drove both home with a double to left-center putting the Owls ahead, 8-2. WWU had the bases loaded but could not get anyone else across.
 
After allowing a run in the third and fourth innings, Feucht kept the Trojans off the board in the fifth inning. After back to back hits and a wild pitch, the Trojans had runners on second and third with no outs. Feucht got Seth Brown to pop out and Tim Gurnow to ground into a double-play to end the inning.
 
With the game still 8-2, the Trojans added one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Seth Brown grounded out and on the play the Trojans scored one, trimming the Owls lead to 8-3.
 
WWU added its ninth and tenth runs of the contest in the top of the eighth inning. With one out, Tyler Cunningham collected his fourth hit of the game a single to left. He went to second on a Kemper ground out. Priest followed with a double scoring Cunningham putting the Owls ahead, 9-3. Priest came into score on a Neal Aherin single growing the Owls lead to 10-3.
 
Hannibal-LaGrange would add one more in the ninth inning but it was not enough as the Owls came away with a 10-4 victory.
