Softball Close Out Regular Season With a Split

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University softball team closed out their home schedule with a split with Central Baptist College on Saturday. The Mustangs came away with the win in the first game coming back from a 4-1 deficit, to defeat the Owls, 7-4. The Owls would come back in the second game defeating the Mustangs, 6-2.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Owls senior Hannah Campbell recorded her 100th career stolen base.

The Owls have advanced to the AMC Tournament. They will now wait to see who they play in the best of three series in the AMC Quarterfinals. The quarterfinals will be played at the higher seed site on April 28-29. The winner of the quarterfinals matchup moves to the final site on May 4-5.

Game One
Game Flow

The Mustangs wasted no time in the top of the first as they scored a run before the Owls had a chance to come up to the plate. In the first inning, Kaylee St. John singled home the first run of the contest for the Mustangs.

With the Owls down, Amanda Bouchey sparked the offense in the bottom of the second with a double and teammate Beth Begemann hit a single up the middle, scoring Bouchey. Alli Massey then forced a Mustang error and with the help of Lindsay Van Tress and Olivia Imhoff, the Owls would push three runs across, taking the lead 3-1.

The Owls would threaten again in the bottom of the third with bases loaded, but would not be able to make it out of the inning with any insurance runs.

The game would then be a defensive battle, neither team causing much stress on each other. It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth. Bouchey would come up and hit another double and it would be like déjà vu as Begemann would come up with another RBI single, putting WWU ahead 4-1.

The Mustangs would not give up their fight as they retired Sierra Jacques from the mound when they had bases loaded in the top of the seventh. Unfortuneately the pitching change would not be enough to stop the momentum of the Mustangs who eventually ended up scoring six runs. The Owls would not be able to manufacture any runs, ending with a 7-4 loss in game one of the doubleheader.
