Lynx Sweep Doubleheader Against Owls Baseball

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University baseball team was swept by Lindenwood University – Belleville on Thursday night at Owl Field. The Lynx took game one, 5-1 and game two, 4-3, over the Owls.
 
WWU and LU-B return to action tomorrow, April 28th at Owl Field for one nine-inning contest. First-pitch is set for 1 p.m. The Owls will honor its senior class prior to the start of the contest.
 
Game One
Game Flow

Lindenwood-Belleville struck first in the contest as they scored in the top of the first inning. After Ethan Ruff reached on an Owls error he came into score on a Cory Lubinski single to center field, this put the Lynx ahead 1-0.
 
William Woods answered right back in the bottom half of the first inning. Nolan Aherin doubled to left field to get the Owls started. After a sacrifice bunt moved him to third, Aherin came into score on a balk, tying the game at 1-1.
 
The game stayed 1-1 until the top of the third inning. In the top of the third, the Lynx broke the tie game on a Dylan Skinner single up left side. The RBI single made it 2-1 in favor of the Lynx.
 
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Ryan Phillips singled through the left side. Phillips hit was the last hit of the contest for the Owls. Lindenwood-Belleville broke the game open in the top of the sixth inning when they scored three runs in the frame, extending its lead to 5-1.
 
WWU looked to get things going in the sixth after a Tyler Cunningham walk but he was doubled off on the next hitter. The inning came to end when Phillips struck out swinging. The game remained 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh and the Owls were down to its final outs. WWU could not get anything going as they went down in order and dropped game one, 5-1.

Game Two
Game Flow

WWU jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead against the Lynx in the second game of the doubleheader. In the bottom of the first inning, Nolan Aherin singled to centerfield. He advanced to third on a Lynx error putting runners on the corner. Tyler Cunningham came up and hit a sacrifice fly to left center scoring Aherin and putting the Owls ahead, 1-0.
 
With the Owls ahead 1-0, the Lynx came back tying the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning. Alex Wittenauer hit a home run on a 1-1 count tying the game. That would be all Lindenwood-Belleville would get in the inning.
 
WWU answered back regaining the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Alex St. Pierre led off the inning with a single to right. After a balk, St. Pierre advanced to second base. He moved to third on a ground out. St. Pierre stood on third base with two outs but came into score on a Matt Priest single to left field. Priests single put the Owls ahead 2-1.
 
In the top of the fifth inning the Lynx battled back tying the game at 2-2. With two outs, Pat Gaul singled to first base. He moved to second on a balk. With Gaul at second Alex Wittenauer singled to left scoring Gaul and tying the game.
 
Like the third inning, the Owls answered right back in bottom of the inning. Nolan Aherin singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Tyler Cunningham doubled home Aherin putting the Owls ahead 3-2. WWU could not grow its lead anymore as Cunningham was stranded on second base as the next two Owls were retired.
 
The Lynx took the lead from the Owls in the top of the seventh inning when they scored two runs of the Owls reliever. Drew Fair stole third base and scored on an Owls error tying the game at 3-3. Lindenwood-Belleville score one more in the inning taking a 4-3 lead in the contest.
 
William Woods offense could not get anything going after the sixth inning and were held hitless the final three innings of the contest and dropped game two, 4-3.
