Baseball Falls to Lyon, 10-4; Owls Still Alive at AMC Championship

HENDERSON, Tenn. – The William Woods University baseball team suffered its first loss at the AMC Championship on Saturday evening as they were defeated by Lyon College, 10-4, at Carnes Field on the campus of Freed-Hardeman University.
 
The Owls, who are still alive in the double-elimination tournament, will play the winner of the Freed-Hardeman University and Missouri Baptist University contest. Game Flow
After a scoreless first inning, the Scots scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning when Kylan Barnett home to right-center. The Scots did not hold the lead long as in the bottom of the second inning, Tyler Cunningham led off the inning with a solo home run tying the game at 1-1.
 
William Woods came out and took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, Jansen Smith tripled down the right field line. He came into score on the next batter when Glen DesBouillons hit a sacrifice fly to shallow left center.
 
Lyon answered back in the top of the fifth inning. The Scots scored three runs on two hits aided by two Owls errors in the inning. In the inning, the Owls committed two costly errors with one out before the Scots score. After four and a half innings of play, the Scots led the Owls, 4-2.
 
The Scots continued to add to the lead and they extended its lead to 5-2 in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs, the Owls committed another error which led to a run. The bats remained hot for the Scots in the top of the eighth inning. Lyon scored five runs on two hits on two Owls errors and the Owls trailed 10-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth inning.
 
The Owls slowly started chipping away in the bottom of the eighth inning. Neal Aherin and Ryan Phillips hit back to back singles putting two one. Cunningham came back and single scoring one putting the Owls down, 10-3. After a pitching change, Konrad Kemper singled scoring another putting another run on the board as the Owls trailed 10-4. However, the Owls would leave two on and the game would go to the ninth inning with the Scots leading 10-4.
 
After a one-two-three top of the ninth the Owls came with its final three outs of the contest. After a groundout, Nolan Aherin walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. However, he would be stranded on second as the next two Owls were struck out ending the game. WWU was defeated by 10-4 by the Scots.
