LAMONI, Iowa – The William Woods University men's soccer team played Graceland University to a 0-0 double-overtime draw in its 2017 season opener on Wednesday night in Lamoni, Iowa.
The Owls and Yellow Jackets recorded 14 shots each in the contest.
Conor Cable recorded seven saves to help lead the Owls to the draw.
The Owls return to action on Wednesday, August 30th when they travel to Fayette, Missouri to face Central Methodist University in a non-conference match. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Game Flow
Graceland had the first scoring chance in the contest as Robert Turk fired a shot on goal but Cable recorded his first save of the game. A few minutes later,
Victor Faure got the Owls first shot on goal but Dylan Deason recorded the save.
Later in the first half,
Satchel Manley had two shot attempts with one going high and one going wide of goal.
Darren Wilson followed with a shot on goal but the Yellow Jackets came away with a team save keeping the match scoreless.
Wilson's chance was the last chance the Owls had to score in the first half and after 45 minutes of play, the Owls and Yellow Jackets went scoreless into halftime.
WWU's offense continued to attack in the early stages of the second half.
Zachary Baliva had a shot on goal, which Deason saved. Two minutes later,
Alberto Pitarch had a shot go wide of goal.
Graceland put five shots on goal in the second half, but the Owls career shutout leader
Conor Cable, recorded five saves in the half keeping the game scoreless.
William Woods had the last scoring chance with seven minutes remaining in the second half but Baliva's shot went wide of goal and the Owls and Yellow Jackets would head to overtime for the second straight season.
The Owls had the first shot on goal when Wilson took a shot but Deason made the save. That would be the Owls only shot of the first overtime. After Wilson's shot, Graceland had two shots on goal and Cable made the saves. Cable and Deason kept the game scoreless in the second overtime and the Owls and Yellow Jackets played to a 0-0 draw in both teams season openers.
