Women’s Soccer Defeats Southwestern Christian, 1-0

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's soccer team got back in the win column on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Southwestern Christian University.
 
WWU's goal was scored by Aurora Henriksen with assists from Colleen Bayer and Shelby Scanlan. WWU outshot the Eagles, 15-4, over the contest, including 7-1 with shots on goal.
 
William Woods returns to action on Tuesday, September 12 when they travel to Columbia, Missouri to face Stephens College. This will be the Owls AMC opener. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
 
Game Flow
William Woods put pressure on the Eagles defense early in the contest as they had a corner kick within the first 30 second of the match. After the corner kick, Lexi Rosa missed a shot wide. Four minutes later, Shelby Scanlan missed a shot wide.
 
Southwestern Christian University had its first shot of the contest with 36:46 left in the first half when Emily Anderson had a shot go wide. Three minutes later, Tessa Spoonemore fired a shot on goal that Rebecca Sturgess made the save on. This was the Eagles lone shot on goal for the game. About 45 seconds after her shot on goal, Spoonemore fired a shot high of goal.
 
WWU countered following the Eagles scoring shot, as they went down and Claire Stark put a shot on goal but her shot was saved. Henriksen followed with two more shots but each of her shots went wide of goal.
 
William Woods continued to put pressure on the Eagles goalkeeper but could not score a goal and the Owls and Eagles went into halftime scoreless.
 
The Owls wasted little time in the second half getting onto the scoreboard. Within the first four minute of the contest, Shelby Scanlan found Colleen Bayer who headed the ball to Henriksen who beat the Eagles goalie putting the Owls ahead 1-0.
 
WWU continued to put pressure on the Eagles as a few minutes later, Scanlan had a shot on goal that was saved. WWU continued to put shots on goal but their shots continued to go wide or high of goal.
 
Southwestern Christian did not get a shot on goal in the second half and only one shot in the second half of the contest. The shot came with 29:31 left in the contest, and the shot went wide.
 
The Owls could not get another shot to find the back of the net in the contest. WWU came away with a 1-0 victory over the Eagles.
