Women’s Soccer Scores Six Goals in Victory over Stephens

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The William Woods University women's soccer team scored a season-high six goals en route to a 6-0 victory over Stephens College in the Owls American Midwest Conference opener on Tuesday night.
 
The Owls outshot the scores 45-0 in the contest and 21-0 with shots on goal. Aurora Henriksen and Shelby Scanlan scored two goals for the Owls and Claire Stark and Alexis Willingham added one for WWU.
 
The Owls return to action on Saturday, September 16th when they travel to St. Louis, Mo. to face Missouri Baptist University. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
 
Game Flow
William Woods came out on fire as they had six shots in the first 15 minutes of the contest but could not score a goal. The shots continued to get shot put the Stars Goalie, Maeghan Ely continued to record saves. Ely had eight saves in the first half of the contest.
 
The Owls got onto the scoreboard with 23 seconds left in the first half. Kylie Roach sent a cross in from the left side and Claire Stark placed her shot in the bottom right corner putting the Owls ahead, 1-0, which would be the score at halftime.
 
WWU added its second goal of the contest within the first three minutes of the second half. Stephens tried to clear the ball out of the box but Aurora Henriksen returned the ball back in with a shot on goal that she kept low and beat Ely for the Owls second goal of the contest.
 
After Henriksen's goal, the Owls did not score another goal until there was 16:07 left on the clock. Alexis Willingham sent a cross in from the right side, which Shelby Scanlan sent to the lower right corner for the Owls third goal of the contest.
 
Less than two minutes later, Scanlan returned the favor to Willingham. Scanlan kicked the ball to the right top of the box, where Willingham sent a shot past Ely for the Owls fourth goal.
 
William Woods added two more goals in the match, the first with 2:39 left in the contest, when Elyssa Cappaert found Scanlan in front of the net and Scanlan scored her second goal of the game putting the Owls ahead, 5-0.
 
Less than a minute later, Elyssa Cappaert had a shot that Ely saved, however, Henriksen was in the right spot and sent it past Ely for her second goal of the contest extending the lead to 6-0. WWU came away with a 6-0 shutout victory over Stephens.
