Volleyball Earns Fourth Straight Sweep

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The William Woods University volleyball team swept its fourth straight match on Friday night with a sweep of Haskell Indian Nations University. The Owls won, 25-14, 25-13, 25-16, to earn the sweep.
 
Abby Ferguson and Kira Krebill led the Owls with seven kills in the match. Brittney Engelbrecht dished out 31 assists and Jessica Jensen had 21 digs in the match. WWU recorded seven blocks in the match.
 
WWU returns to action on Tuesday, September 19th when they travel to Point Lookout, Missouri to face College of the Ozarks. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
 
Game Flow
The Owls came out of the gate swinging as they scored the first four points of the match. After Haskell scored two points, the Owls again scored the next four points. During the second stretch, the Owls had kills by Tory Wiley and Kate Doerhoff. Haskell tried to mount a comeback but they would not let the Indians back into the match. A kill by Abby Ferguson put the Owls ahead by seven, 18-11. WWU grew the lead to 23-12 after another Ferguson kill. WWU came away with a 25-14 first set win.
 
WWU opened the second set scoring 10 of the first 13 points of the set. Wily put the Owls ahead by seven, 10-3, with a kill. WWU stretched the lead to 10, 16-6, after the Owls scored three straight points on kills by Rayleen Rivera, and two attack errors by Haskell. WWU continued to stretch the lead as they grew it to 20-8. WWU did not let the Indians back in the contest and took set two, 25-13.
 
Haskell looked to be growing momentum opening the third set as they took a 4-2 lead over the Owls. However, the lead did not last long as the Owls tied the contest at 5-5 after a Haskell service error. Haskell took the lead at 6-5, but the Owls scored the next six points taking an 11-6 lead. During the run the Owls had two aces by Ferguson. After taking the lead, the Owls continued to grow the lead and a kill by Kira Krebill the Owls led 16-9. WWU continued to lead and built the lead to 21-12 after a Jaclyn Zahn kill. WWU did not let Haskell back in the match and took set three, 25-16, and the match.
