ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The William Woods University men's soccer team opened American Midwest Conference play with a 2-0 victory over Missouri Baptist University on Saturday night in St. Louis, Missouri.
Pedro Ferro and
Rodrigo Alves scored goals for the Owls while
Satchel Manley and
Riley King collected assists for the Owls. WWU outshot the Spartans 4-0 on shots on goal and 23-12 on shots in the contest.
William Woods returns to action on Tuesday, September 19th when they host Hannibal-LaGrange University at Firley Field. The Owls and Trojans kickoff at 5 p.m.
Game Flow
The Owls looked to score early in the contest against Missouri Baptist as the owls had four shots in the first 15 minutes of the game but during that stretch the Owls could not get a ball past the Spartans goalie.
William Woods kept the pressure on Missouri Baptist but could not get anything past the Spartans goalkeeper in the first. WWU and the Spartans went scoreless into halftime.
Within the first 10 minutes of the second half, the Owls scored the first goal of the contest. On a corner kick, the Owls
Pedro Ferro headed in the kick from
Satchel Manley putting the Owls ahead 1-0.
The game remained 1-0 and the Owls defense continued to pressure the Spartans offense. Missouri Baptist had nine shots in the second half but none of the shots were on goal.
WWU added to its lead with 10:06 left in the second half. After a shot went wide,
Rodrigo Alves took a pass from
Riley King and beat the Spartans goalie extending the Owls lead to 2-0.
The Owls defense continued to pressure the Spartans as they did not allow a shot on goal for the final 10 minutes of the contest and the Owls came away with a 2-0 victory.
