FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University men's soccer team improved to 2-0 in American Midwest Conference action on Tuesday night with a 1-0 victory over Hannibal-LaGrange University at Firley Field.
For the Owls, the win is the first win over Hannibal-LaGrange since the 2004 season. Scoring the game-winning goal for the Owls was
Roberto Duro Sanchez. WWU outshot the Trojans 25-7 in the contest.
WWU returns to action tomorrow, Wednesday, September 20th when they host University of Saint Mary (Kan.). Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
Game Flow
William Woods looked to be getting on the board early as
Pedro Ferro and
Rodrigo Alves had shots on goal but the Trojans made the saves. WWU came back and had four more shot attempts in the first ten minutes of the contest but could not get a goal.
The scoring chances continued for the Owls as they had 13 shots in the first half of the contest, however they could not get one of the six shots on goal past Joaquin Hansen. The Owls and Trojans went into halftime scoreless.
William Woods continued to pressure the Trojans defense to open the second half. Alves missed two shots wide and had another shot saved in the first seven minutes of the half. Seven minutes later the Owls scored the first goal of the contest.
Matheus Schmid sent a ball in the box and
Roberto Duro Sanchez found the back of the net putting the Owls ahead, 1-0.
The Owls continued to put the pressure on Hannibal-LaGrange put Hansen continued to make saves. Hannibal-LaGrange tried to get shots on goal but the Owls defenders did not give the Trojans a clear look at the net as they were continuously blocking shots.
Late in the second half, the Owls tried to extend its lead but the shots went wide. WWU did not allow a shot to the Trojans over the final five minutes of the contest and WWU came away with its first win over Hannibal-LaGrange since 2004.
