FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University Men's Soccer team won its fourth straight contest on Wednesday evening as they defeated University of Saint Mary (Kan.), 2-1, at Firley Field.
The win gave Head Coach
Nathan Mason his 100th career victory at William Woods. He is the only coach in program history with 100 career wins at WWU. The Owls had goals scored by
Rodrigo Alves and
Darren Wilson scored the game winner for the Owls.
William Woods returns to action on Saturday, September 23rd when they travel to Conway, Arkansas to face Central Baptist University in AMC action. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Game Flow
Neither team could gain any momentum early in the contest. The first shot of the contest came with 20:39 left in the first half when
Joshua Noel hit the crossbar on a shot. Forty-five seconds later,
Logan Christopher had a shot that was saved by the Spires goalkeeper.
WWU continued to put pressure on Saint Mary as they had five more shots in the half but could not get a goal. The Spires had two shots in the half and one was saved the other was missed wide. The contest went into halftime scoreless.
William Woods wasted little time scoring in the second half as they scored within the first 30 seconds of the half.
Darren Wilson sent a cross into the box that
Rodrigo Alves headed into the goal, putting the Owls ahead, 1-0.
The Owls looked as if they would extend its lead early in the half but they had four shots go wide or high and the continued to hold a 1-0 lead. After the Owls four misses wide, Saint Mary had its chances as Felipe Chavez had a shot that
Matheus Taraszkiewicz saved. The next shot by the Spires went wide.
With 28:42 left in the contest, the Spires tied the contest at 1-1 as Francisco Sanchez found Branden Sanchez for a goal.
WWU responded and put the pressure back on the Spires defense.
Gabriel Fontana missed a shot wide. Alves had another chance to score but his shot was saved by Enrique Gonzales. WWU broke the scoreless tie with 16:28 left in the contest as
Anthony Moscatello found Wilson for a goal in the contest putting the Owls ahead, 2-1.
William Wood continued to pressure the Spires defense as they had two more shots missed high and two shots saved. Saint Mary had one shot attempt after the Owls go ahead goal and the shot went high. The Owls extended its winning streak to four, with a 2-1 victory.
