Women’s Soccer and Williams Baptist Draw 1-1 in Double Overtime

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – The William Woods University women's soccer team scored late in the second half to earn a 1-1 double overtime draw against Williams Baptist College on Monday afternoon in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas.
 
WWU had 35 shots in the game and 12 shots on goal in the contest. Claire Stark scored the lone goal for the Owls. WWU's Rebecca Sturgess made four saves in the contest.
 
The Owls return to action on Saturday, September 30th when they host Lindenwood University-Belleville at Firley Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
 
Game Flow
The Owls offense came out looking to score early as the Owls had 10 shots in the first half. Five minutes into the contest, Elyssa Cappaert put a shot off the crossbar. Five minutes later Shelby Scanlan had a shot on goal that Jasmine Espinoza saved.
 
Madeline Mead got the first shot on goal in the match for the Eagles. She lobbed a shot from 30 yards out that went over the Owls goalie and Williams Baptist took a 1-0 lead.
 
WWU's offense continued attacking but the Owls could not get a shot to go during the first half. Claire Stark put a shot off the crossbar and the Owls had six more shots go wide or high of goal. With six minutes before halftime, Jaclyn Zilch put a shot on goal that was saved by Espinoza. WWU trailed 1-0 going into halftime.
 
William Woods kept the shots coming in the second as the Owls had the first four shots in the second half but could not score. Later in the half, Scanlan was the third different Owl to find the crossbar. WBC led the Owls, 1-0, with 27:19 left in the contest.
 
With 19:30 left in the contest, the Owls scored its first goal, tying the game at 1-1. Claire Stark took a pass from Lexi Rosa and from 22 yards out went to the upper left corner beating Espinoza. Nine seconds later, the Owls Cappaert had a shot on goal but Espinoza made the save.
 
WWU continued to get shots but could not get another shot past Espinoza and the Eagles and Owls went to overtime tied at 1-1.
 
The Owls had a great scoring chance 20 seconds into overtime as Scanlan had a shot on goal but Espinoza made the save. Scanlan had the only other shot the Owls had on goal in the first overtime and the game went to a second overtime tied at 1-1.
 
The Eagles looked to win the game as they had a shot on goal to start the second overtime but Sturgess made the save keeping the game tied. WWU had the rest of the shots in the overtime as Scanlan had another shot saved by Espinoza. A couple of minutes after Scanlan's goal, Jaclyn Zilch had a shot but the Eagles made a team save. The Owls had two more opportunities to score as Cappaert and Vogt but Espinoza recorded the saves and the game ended in a 1-1 double-overtime draw.
