FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's soccer team scored three goals in the first eight minutes of the contest en route to a 4-1 victory over visiting Lindenwood University – Belleville on Saturday afternoon at Firley Field.
Three different Owls scored a goal in the contest, as
Shelby Scanlan,
Aurora Henriksen and
Shelby Wiebe scored. WWU outshot the Lynx 16-12 in the match.
The Owls return to action on Saturday, October 7
th when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri to face St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
Game Flow
The Owls offense came out scoring early and often.
Shelby Scanlan was the first goal to score when she got a pass from
Jenna Vogt for the goal.
Aurora Henriksen found Vogt who sent the ball in the box. Less than a minute later, the Owls grew the lead to 2-0 after Henriksen found Scanlan for her second goal of the contest.
Five minutes later the Owls had its lead to 3-0. Henriksen found a loose ball and beat Alondra Balderrama for the third goal of the contest.
WWU continued to put pressure on the Lynx defense as
Claire Stark had a shot saved by Balderrama. The Owls then had three straight shots go wide of goal.
The Lynx got a shot on goal with 7:35 left in the first half when Maddison Beck put a shot on goal that
Rebecca Sturgess saved. WWU took a 3-0 lead into halftime.
The Owls came out in the second half looking to extend the lead as they had shot opportunities, however, both Owls shots went wide of goal.
Lindenwood-Belleville got its first goal of the contest with 29:27 left in the contest. Maisie Kincaid found Jasmine Smith, who beat Sturgess, cutting the Owls lead down to two, 3-1.
William Woods answered back six minutes later. With Scanlan on the wing, she sent a cross that
Shelby Wiebe headed in putting the Owls ahead by three, 4-1.
Both teams continued to put pressure on each other's defenses and the Lynx had a scoring chance with 15:52 left in the contest when Casey Wood had a shot that Sturgess saved. After the Lynx scoring chance the Owls answered back as
Kylie Roach sent a shot on goal that was saved by Luisa Santillian.
The Lynx came back and had one more shot in the contest as Smith sent a shot wide of goal. WWU came away with a 4-1 victory over Lindenwood – Belleville.
