Men’s Soccer Plays Culver-Stockton to Double-Overtime Draw

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University men's soccer team and Culver-Stockton College played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw on Wednesday evening at Firley Field in the Owls home opener.
 
Roberto Duro Sanchez scored the lone goal for the Owls on an assist from Rodrigo Alves. WWU outshot the Wildcats, 19-13, in the contest. Darren Wilson and Stefan Simic led the Owls with four shots each. Conor Cable made four saves in the match.
 
WWU returns to action on Tuesday, September 12th when they travel to Ottawa, Kansas to play Ottawa University in a non-conference match. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
 
Game Flow
In a physical contest, the Wildcats got the first shot of the game as Patrick Stutt had a shot with 38:43 left in the first half, but Cable made the save. This would be the Wildcats lone shot on goal in the first half of the match.
 
After the Wildcats shot, the Owls looked to get things going offensively as Roberto Duro Sanchez had a shot go high. A few minutes later, Darren Wilson had a shot that was blocked. After Wilsons shot the Owls had one more shot in the half when Joshua Noel had a shot go high of goal. WWU and Culver-Stockton went scoreless into halftime.
 
Culver-Stockton's Mackenzie Northern had two good scoring chances with 33:30 left in the second half. His first shot hit the post and bounced right back to him. His second shot he fired wide of the target.
 
After Northern's shots, the Owls countered and Pedro Ferro fired a shot high of goal. Culver-Stockton answered right back as William Mansfield had a shot that Cable saved keeping the game scoreless.
 
WWU's offense continued to attack and with 12:22 left in the second half, the Owls scored the first goal of the game. Rodrigo Alves found Duro Sanchez, who found the back of the net, putting the Owls ahead 1-0.
 
Culver-Stockton answered back six minutes later as Luke Blackburn took a pass from Northern and scored the tying goal forcing overtime.
 
William Woods continued to pressure on the offensive end in the first overtime. WWU had three shots in goal in the first six minutes of the first overtime. Nicholas Luciani recorded two saves and the Owls had a shot go high. Culver-Stockton had one scoring attempt and Cable made the save, forcing a second overtime.
 
In the second overtime, Simic had a shot go wide to open the period. After Simic's shot, the Wildcats got a shot go high of goal. Following the Owls had two shots go wide and the Wildcats Northern had a shot saved by Cable. The game ended in a 1-1 double-overtime draw.
