FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University men's basketball team got off to a slow start that haunted the Owls as they went the first eight minutes of the contest without a field goal. WWU fell to Lyon College, 61-52, on Saturday afternoon in American Midwest Conference action.
Brian Enriquez led the Owls with 17 points in the contest. Enriquez was four-of-eight on three pointers in the game.
Darrien Dickey followed with 16 points in the contest. WWU shot 32.6 percent from the floor.
The Owls return to action on Thursday, January 11th when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri to face St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
Game Flow
Both offenses came out of the gate slow as neither team scored for the first four minutes of the contest. Tyler Robinson broke the scoreless game with a three-pointer. Over the next two minutes, the Owls were held scoreless and the Scots hit two more threes taking a 9-0 lead over the Owls.
WWU scored its first points of the game with 13:58 left in the half when
Brandon Vice hit a pair of free throws. Just over a minute later, the Owls scored its first field goal of the half when
Darrien Dickey scored a layup on a pass from
Brian Enriquez.
The Scots grew its lead to 10, 26-16, with 5:33 left in the half after an Emir Sabic three-pointer. After Sabic's basket, both teams went scoreless until Tyler Robinson scored with 39 seconds left in the half. His basket put the Scots ahead, 28-16. Following the basket, Enriquez hit three-pointer taking the lead down to nine, 28-19, which would be the halftime score.
William Woods came out and scored the first four points of the second half, taking the lead down to five, 28-23. Following the run, Lyon and WWU traded baskets and after a three by Spencer Brown, the Owls trailed by 14, 37-23.
WWU continued to chip away at the lead and after being down 11, 41-30, WWU had four straight points scored by Dickey taking the lead down to seven. Both teams traded hoops and a three by Enriquez put the Owls down six, 46-40, with 8:37 left in the contest.
The Owls scored the next four points cutting the lead down to two, 46-42, with 5:55 left in the contest. The Scots grew its lead back to seven, 52-45, after a three by Justas Narusas with 3:29 left. WWU continued to battle and a three-point play by Dickey put the Owls down two, 54-52 with a minute and half left. Dickey's basket would be the last points for the Owls and the Scots came away with a 61-52 victory over the Owls.
