Women’s Basketball Falls to No. 13 Lyon, 59-57

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's basketball team came up short against No. 13 Lyon College on Saturday afternoon. The Scots came away with a 59-57 victory over the Owls. The Owls had two opportunities to tie the game but both shots were missed at the buzzer.
 
WWU was led by a duo of players as Peyton Greenlee and Hannah Bland led the Owls with 16 points each. Jasmine Brown followed with 15 points. WWU shot 39.6 percent from the floor. Bland led the Owls in rebounding with seven.
 
The Owls return to action on Tuesday, January 9th when they host Greenville College in non-conference action. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Anderson Arena.
 
Game Flow
WWU came out against the Scots and slowly took a four-point lead, 8-4, over the No. 13 team in the nation. After leading by four, the Scots came scoring the next four points tying the game at 8-8, with 3:40 left in the quarter. WWU hit one more field goal in the quarter and Lyon scored five taking a 13-10 lead over the Owls.
 
The Scots jumped out to a six-point lead, 16-10, opening the second quarter but the Owls continued to battle against the Scots. WWU traded baskets but found themselves down five three minutes later. WWU came back and scored the next nine points taking a 21-19 lead. Jasmine Brown scored four, Peyton Greenlee added a three and Hannah Bland added a layup for the Owls during the 9-0 run. WWU did not give up the lead for the rest of the quarter and took a 26-24 lead into halftime.
 
Both teams came out and traded baskets in the second half and after a three by Allison Tackett, the Scots led 33-30. WWU trailed 35-32 before Greenelee hit another three tying the contest. The Scots grew the lead to four before the Owls came back on four straight by Bland tying the game at 40-40. William Woods did not score over the final 3:44 of the third quarter and Lyon scored seven points, and Lyon took a 47-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
William Woods did not give up and continued to battle and a jumper in the paint by Tori Nesslage trimmed the lead down to five, 49-44. WWU's Sommer Burgard hit a layup a minute and a half later and the Owls trailed by three, 49-46. Liz Henderson hit a three growing the lead to six for the Scots but the Owls continued to fight and back to back threes by Greenlee tied the game at 52-52 with 6:02 left. Greenlee put the Owls ahead with a runner a minute after hitting her second three.
 
The Scots scored the next four points taking a 56-54 lead over the Owls. Both teams went scoreless for the next minute and a half until Jasmine Brown went 1-for-2 from the line and the Owls trailed 56-55 with 1:33 left in the contest. Thirty seconds later, Madison Riley went 1-for-2 taking a 57-55 lead over WWU. Hannah Bland got fouled 15 seconds later and hit both free throws tying the game at 57-57. On the next possession for the Scots, Henderson hit a two-pointer taking a two-point lead, 59-57. The Owls had two opportunities to tie the game but both shots were missed at the buzzer and the Owls fell to No. 13, 59-57.
