FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's basketball team used a strong second half to pull away from the Panthers of Greenville University on Tuesday night in non-conference action. The Owls outscored the Panthers by 18 points in the second half, leading WWU to a 76-58 victory.
Leading the way for the Owls was senior
Jasmine Brown. Brown scored 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting.
Peyton Greenlee followed with 17 points and
Hannah Bland added 12 points to round out the double-figure scorers. WWU shot 40 percent from the field and forced the Panthers into 16 turnovers.
WWU returns to action on Thursday, January 11th when they travel to St. Louis, Mo. to face St. Louis College of Pharmacy in AMC action. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
Game Flow
The Owls and Panthers came out of the gates on fire as the game was tied at 8-8 over the first two and a half minutes of the contest. Trailing by three, 11-8,
Bailey Rollins hit a three-pointer tying the game. WWU took a two-point lead after a jumper in the paint by Bland. Greenville tied the game at 13-13 after a shot by Kelly Lenz and
Peyton Greenlee hit a three on the Owls next possession taking a 16-13 lead.
The Panthers trimmed the lead down to one, 16-15, before the Owls slowly extended its lead to six points, 21-15. WWU and Greenville continued to trade baskets and the Owls led 26-21, after one quarter of play.
The Owls offense went quiet to open the second quarter as they did not score for the first four minutes of the quarter. Over the first four minutes, Greenville came back and took a two-point lead, 28-26, after a free throw by Wesley Woodard. Once the Owls started scoring the Panthers and Owls traded baskets and the game was tied at 31-31, with 3:28 left in the quarter. The game remained tied ending to halftime at 36-36.
Opening the third quarter, the Owls and Panthers continued to trade leads and the contest was tied at 44-44 with 6:09 left in the quarter. Over the next four minutes the Owls outscored the Panthers by six and WWU took a 52-46 lead. However, the Panthers did not go away as they cut the lead down to two, 52-50, before a
Lexy Ganaway three closed out the quarter putting the Owls ahead 55-50.
William Woods opened the fourth quarter on a 10-4 run taking a 65-54 run that was capped by a layup by
Hannah Bland. Greenville tried to continue to battle but the Owls locked down on the defensive end and only allowed the Panthers eight points in the quarter. With 2:30 left in the quarter, the Owls led 71-55 after a Greenlee jumper. WWU did not let the Panthers back into the contest and WWU came away with a 76-58 victory.
