Owls Upset No. 4 Columbia in Overtime

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's basketball team upset the No. 4-ranked Columbia Cougars in overtime Thursday evening, 74-65. The win brought the Owls to 3-0 in conference play, 6-2 on the season, and snapped the Cougars perfect season.

Kaycee Gerald posted a double-double in the win, putting up 22 points and pulling down 10 boards. She went 5-for-6 from the field with three three-pointers while going 9-for-11 from the foul line. Peyton Greenlee added 18 points to the win.

The Owls will now face Missouri Baptist on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 1 p.m.
 
Game Flow
Thursday evening's game started off slow with the first points going on the board almost three minutes into the game. Columbia put the first points up and stayed one step ahead of the Owls for most of the low scoring first quarter. With 22 seconds left in the quarter, Lexy Ganaway hit a three to tie the game at 9-9.

A Peyton Greenlee three-pointer and short jumper gave the Owls a three point lead halfway through the second quarter, 16-13.

The Owls maintained the lead throughout the rest of the quarter, and a foul on Kaycee Gerald's made bucket at the buzzer gave her the opportunity to add one more to the board before halftime. She sunk the free throw, sending the Owls into break with a 25-21 lead.

A three from Kasey Hazell just one minute into the second half gave the Owls a seven-point advantage, but Columbia took a two-point lead with a 9-0 run spanning just under two minutes.

A two from Ashleigh Frampton followed by a bucket from Kasey Hazell off her steal put the Owls back up by two with 5:43 on the clock.

Columbia knotted the game up twice before taking a four-point lead. Kaycee Gerald hit a three and made one free throw to tie the game at 42 all with 2:01 to play. Columbia scored the final bucket just before the buzzer to send the game into the fourth quarter with Columbia up 44-42.

Columbia held possession of the lead throughout most of the final quarter of regulation and took up an eight-point lead with 3:20 to play, but the Owls pushed an eight-point run in the final three minutes while holding Columbia scoreless to tie up the game and send the undefeated ranked team into overtime.

Kaycee Gerald scored the first five points for the Owls, taking a three-point lead in the process, 59-56.

Columbia tied the game 43 seconds into overtime, but the Owls dominated the rest of the game. They pushed a 9-0 run over a two minute span to bring the game to the final 30 seconds. Columbia scored six in the final 30 seconds but Kaycee Gerald went 4-for-4 from the foul line to seal the game with a 74-65 win.
