CONWAY, Ark. – The William Woods University women's basketball team shot 60.4 percent from the floor as they defeated Central Baptist College, 74-58, in American Midwest Conference action on Thursday night.
Leading the Owls was
Hannah Bland who scored 19 points on 8-for-11 shooting.
Peyton Greenlee followed with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
Kaycee Gerald and
Jasmine Brown scored 11 points each in the contest. With the win, the Owls clinched a spot in the AMC Women's Basketball Conference Tournament.
WWU returns to action on Saturday, February 17th when they travel to Batesville, Arkansas to face No. 18 Lyon College. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
Game Flow
Peyton Greenlee came out shooting the ball well as she made her first two shots, a three and a fast break layup, and WWU led 5-2 over the first minute of the contest. After four straight by the Mustangs, WWU scored nine straight taking a 14-6 lead. WWU continued to grow its lead and after a three-point play by
Kaycee Gerald, WWU led 17-10. The Mustangs hit the last shot of the half and after one quarter of play, WWU led 17-12.
Central Baptist opened the second quarter on 5-0 run taking a 20-17 lead over the Owls after a Karlie Senko three. WWU answered back and regained the lead on a jumper by
Hannah Bland, 21-20, with 6:52 left in the quarter. WWU slowly grew the lead back to five, 27-22, after a three-pointer by
Bailey Rollins. The Mustangs trimmed the lead down to two, 27-25. William Woods grew the lead back to eight, 37-29, heading to halftime.
The Mustangs came out and scored the first five points of the third quarter trimming the Owls lead down to three, 37-34, with 8:02 left in the quarter. The Owls answered back going on a 12-0 run taking a 49-34 lead after a three by Greenlee. Over the Owls run, WWU kept the Mustangs scoreless for eight minutes. With six seconds left, Kory Westerman hit a three putting the Owls lead down to 12, 49-37.
Over the first two and a half minutes of the fourth quarter, the Owls slowly grew the lead to 17 points, 58-41, with 7:25 left in the contest. After leading by 17, Central Baptist rebounded by going on an 8-0 run and trimming the lead down to nine, 58-49. The Owls would extend its lead back to 20 points, 69-49, after going on a 11-0 run that was capped by an old-fashion three-point play. William Woods did not allow the Mustangs back into the contest and came away with a 74-58 victory.
