BATESVILLE, Ark. – The William Woods University women's basketball team suffered a 77-55 loss to No. 18 Lyon College on Saturday afternoon in American Midwest Conference action.
Leading the Owls was a trio of scorers who had 11 points each.
Peyton Greenlee,
Kaycee Gerald and
Hannah Bland all scored 11 points and
Jasmine Brown followed with 10 points. WWU shot 42.6 percent from the floor.
WWU returns to action on Thursday, February 22 when they host St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
Game Flow
The Scots came out and scored the first four points as Madison Riley scored all four. After trailing by four, WWU came back by scoring the next seven points over the next two minutes of the contest taking a 7-4 lead. With the Owls leading, the Scots and Owls traded baskets and with 2:32 left in the quarter, the Owls led 13-11. The Scots came back and took a 16-15 lead but the Owls scored the final three points in the quarter, and WWU led 18-16.
In the second quarter, Ali Tucker hit a shot in the paint putting the Scots ahead 23-18. A jumper by
Tori Nesslage put the Owls down three, 25-22. The Scots stretched the lead to seven, 31-24, after a Liz Henderson three with 5:40 left in the half. William Woods continued to battle back and a three by
Peyton Greenlee put the Owls down 36-32. WWU went the final three minutes scoreless and the Scots took a 41-32 lead into halftime.
After trading buckets to open the third quarter, WWU slowly started chipping away at the Scots lead. Down by 11, 45-34, WWU scored the next six points capped by a
Hannah Bland jumper in the paint putting the Owls down 45-40. Lyon stretched the lead back to 12, 52-40. Again, the Owls started chipping away at the lead and a three by Greenlee put the Owls down seven, 52-45. Seven would be as close as the Owls would get in the quarter and trailed by seven. 56-49, after three quarters of play.
WWU would not get closer than seven points the rest of the contest as the Owls offense went cold in the fourth quarter. William Woods went 1-for-11 in the fourth quarter shooting nine percent in the quarter while the Scots shot 50 percent. The Owls lone field goal came with 5:20 left in the quarter when
Jasmine Brown hit a jumper. WWU hit four free throws in the quarter and were defeated by Lyon, 77-55.
