Baseball Swept by College of the Ozarks

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. – The William Woods University baseball team concluded its four-game set with the Bobcats of College of the Ozarks on Saturday afternoon. The Owls were swept by the Bobcats. WWU dropped game one, 7-5 and dropped game two, 13-3. 
 
WWU was outscored 20-8 in the final two games of the series. William Woods had 20 hits combined in Saturday's doubleheader. A trio of Owls had three hits leading the way.
 
WWU returns to action on Tuesday, March 27th when they take on No. 24 Central Methodist University in non-conference action. First-pitch is set for 5 p.m.
 
Game One
Game Flow

The Owls struggled offensively early and often in the game to drive in runs. With two outs, Tyler Cunningham singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. He moved to third on a Nolan Aherin single. With two on, the Owls could not get another hit to get a run.
 
The Owls put two runners on base in the second inning, as Marquise Doherty singled and went to second base on a Bobcat error. Jordan Smith walked but the runners would be left stranded on the bases.
 
Making his second start of the season, Adam Grunden kept the Bobcats bats quiet for the first two innings. He recorded two strike outs, two fly outs, a ground out and pick off in the first two innings.
 
It looked as if they Owls would get a run in the top of the third inning. Cunningham got the offense started with a single. With two outs, Tyler Bracht was hit by a pitch and Patrick Dillon drew a walk to load the bases, but the Owls could not get a run across.
 
College of the Ozarks got to Grunden in the third inning. Back to back hits put runners on second and third. After the first out of the inning, Chad Reusch singled scoring one. Jacob Karlson hit a sacrifice fly putting the Bobcats ahead, 2-0. The Bobcats added four more runs in the innining, three on a Jay Kaufman home run and the Owls trailed 6-0 after three innings of play.
 
In the fourth, the Owls offense had a two out rally. Brian Granton got a single, Frankie Valle reached on an error putting two on. They went to second and third after a passed ball and Cunningham drew a walk loading the bases. Aherin followed with a walk and the Owls scored one run. That would all they would get in the inning and trailed 6-1.
 
The contest remained 6-1 until the top of the sixth inning. Granton doubled to get things for the Owls. He advanced to third on a ground and acme into score on a Cunningham single putting the Owls down 6-2.
 
College of the Ozarks added one run in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Owls trailed 7-2 going to its final at-bats.
 
Leading off the inning, Bracht got hit by a pitch. The Owls next two hitters were retired. With one out to go the Owls trailed by five. Connor Poulson singled to center, putting two on. Zach Smith came into pinch hit and hit a three-run home run putting the Owls down two. 7-5. Granton kept the Owls alive with a single before the Owls next hitter was retired and the Owls dropped game one, 7-5.

After the Owls went down in order in the top of the first, the Bobcats got the offense going. Kole Kelley reached on a walk and advanced to third on a JD Payne single. After Dany Paradis-Giroux struck out Dylan Heitz for the second out, Jay Kaufman doubled and scored the first run of the contest.
 
College of the Ozarks added to its lead in the bottom of the second inning. Max Pulley doubled and Westin Gann tripled scoring Pulley and putting the Bobcats ahead, 2-0. The Bobcats were just starting to wake up as Payne doubled in the inning scoring another run. Heitz followed with a single and after two innings of play the Owls trailed 5-0.
 
William Woods started chipping away at the lead as Marquise Doherty singled to get the Owls started. WWU put two runners on with one out after a Glen DesBouillons single. After the second out of the inning, Frankie Valle singled to right scoring one for the Owls.
 
WWU scored its second run of the contest in the top of the fourth inning. Aherin double to right center but the next two Owls were retired. Aherin came into score on an RBI single by Doherty putting the Owls down, 5-2. WWU would have runners on second and third but could not get another run across.
 
College of the Ozarks grew its lead back to four, 6-2, in the bottom of the forth. Heitz delivered a RBI single which scored Karlson for the Bobcats.
 
The Owls trimmed the lead to three, 6-3, in the top of the sixth inning. Zach Smith reached on an error and Trevor Garriott ran for him. Garriott went to third on a single by Dillon. With Doherty, up Dillon was caught stealing. Garriott came into score on Doherty's ground out.
 
The Bobcats answered back in the bottom of the sixth inning when they scored four runs on three hits. In the frame, Kaufman, Burtless and Pulley all recorded RBIs for College of the Ozarks. The Bobcats led 10-3 after six innings of play.
 
The Owls offense went quiet over the next two innings and the Bobcats added to its lead in the bottom of the eighth. College of the Ozarks added three in the frame and the Owls were defeated, 13-3 by the Bobcats.
