Baseball Drops Two to Lyon in AMC Game of the Week

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The William Woods University baseball team dropped both games of the doubleheader to No. 20 Lyon College on Friday afternoon. The Scots took game one, 3-2, in eight innings before claiming the sweep of the Owls by winning game two, 3-0.
 
Leading the way on the day for the Owls was Patrick Dillon. Dillon went three-for-six in the doubleheader. Six different Owls had a hit in the contests. WWU collected 10 hits on the day. WWU pitching staff did not let the Scots do much better as they held Lyon to hit .192 on the day.
 
WWU and Lyon return to action tomorrow, Saturday, March 31st when they conclude the three-game set. First pitch of the single nine inning game is set for 12 p.m.
 
Game One
Game Flow
Over the first two innings of the first game of the doubleheader, neither offenses could get going against the either pitcher. WWU had the only runner on base in the first two innings when Patrick Dillon reached on an error.
 
Lyon collected the first two hits of the game in the top of the third inning. Tristan Buschow and Logan Reddick hit back to back singles. After the two hits, the Owls did not allow another in the inning and the Scot could not score and the game remained scoreless.
 
WWU got its first hit in the bottom of the third inning when Jordan Smith singled to center. He went to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a fly out. However, the Owls could not bring him in.
 
After Smith's hit, neither team had a hit until the top of the sixth inning. Lyon got the next hit when Andrew Sauceda reached on a walk. Kylan Barnett doubled to left center driving in Sauceda for the first run of the game. After a walk and fly out, Zane Pritchard hit a sacrifice fly putting the Scots ahead, 2-0.
 
The Owls answered back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Connor Poulson got the Owls started when he went to second on errors by the Scots. Trevor Garriott ran for him and he came into score on a Nolan Aherin double. WWU tied the game when Frankie Valle hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Aherin. After six innings the game was tied at 2-2.
 
Neither team could get anything going in the seventh inning and the game would go to extra innings. In the eighth inning Barnett walked and stole second base. After a strikeout, Alex Miles single. The Scots continued to threaten, and a Pritchard single put runners on the corners. After a pick off and a ground out the Owls were out of the inning trailing 3-2.
 
WWU could not get anything going in the bottom of the eighth inning as they were retired in order and dropped game one, 3-2, to No. 20 Lyon.

Game Two
Game Flow

The Owls looked as if they would get something going in the bottom of the first inning of game two. Nolan Aherin singled to lead off the game for the Owls. He went to second on a round out and to third on another ground out. With two outs, and a runner on third for the Owls, the had Zach Smith come to the plate. However, Smith grounded out ending the inning.
 
The Scots got to the Owls starter, Ryan Furtney, in the second inning of the contest. After a walk and hit by pitch put two runners on. After an out, a Colton Kooser singled scored the first run of the game for the Scots. Lyon added two more runs in the inning and led 3-0 after an inning and a half.
 
WWU looked as if they would chip away in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Frankie Valle singled to right and Tyler Cunningham singled to right. However, that would be all the Owls would get as the next hitter was retired.
 
After the second inning the Owls pitchers kept the Scots bats quiet as they only had two hits in the next three innings.
 
WWU found itself starting to run out of outs and in the bottom of the fifth, Jordan Smith singled to lead off the inning. However, he was erased when the Owls hit into a double play. Aherin was then hit by a pitch but that would be it for WWU as the next hitter grounded out.
 
The Scots continued struggling at the plate as they went down in order in the sixth inning. WWU came up trailing by three, but the first two hitters were retired. With two outs, Dillon singled but the next hitter grounded out.
 
Lyon got one hit in the top of the seventh inning and that was it and WWU came up with to bat trailing by three with three outs to go.
 
WWU could not get anything going in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Smith reached on a walk and then was retired on a double play which ended the game. WWU dropped game two, 3-0.
