Softball Wins First Two Games in California

TORRANCE, Calif. – The William Woods University softball team opened its spring break trip to California with a sweep of Marymount California University on Sunday afternoon. The Owls came away with a 7-5 extra inning victory in game one and held on to win game two, 6-5.
 
On the day the Owls outhit the Mariners 23 to 17 in the doubleheader. WWU had a trio of players collected three RBIs in the contest, leading the team. WWU hit .333 as a team. Allison Waskow came in, in relief in game one and picked up the win and pitched a complete game in game two for the victory.
 
The Owls return to action on Tuesday, March 6th when they travel to La Mirada, California to face NCAA Division II Biola University. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 6 p.m. CT.
 
Game One
Game Flow

After a scoreless first two innings of the contest, Marymount California got the scoring started in the contest. In the bottom of the third inning, the Mariners had runners on first and third. Sonia Escalera grounded out scoring one putting the Owls down 1-0. They added one more run in the inning and WWU trailed 2-0 after three innings of play.
 
WWU looked as if they would get a two out rally going in the top of the fourth inning. Celeste Sermeno hit a triple to deep right center putting a runner on third base. She would be left on third as the next Owl hitter ended the inning and the Owls trailed 2-0.
 
William Woods came racing back in the top of the fifth inning. The Owls took advantage of the Mariners errors as they scored four runs in the game. With the bases loaded, Devyn Burton reached on an error, which scored one run. Amanda Bouchey picked up an RBI with a hit by pitch. Alli Massey drove in the final two runs of the inning with a single to centerfield.
 
The lead did not last long as the Mariners scored two runs in the bottom half of the fifth. With the bases loaded, Escalera singled to center, scoring two and tying the game at 4-4. Marymount California took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Daisy Cruz Velasquez hit a sacrifice fly.
 
WWU trailed by one heading to the top of the seventh. It did not look good for the Owls as the first two batters were retired. With two outs, Massey hit a double to center putting a runner in scoring position. Sermeno singled her home tying the game at 5-5.
 
Marymount California had two runners on with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. After a pitching change, Waskow struck out two batters and got Brianna Heaviside to ground out and the game would go to extra innings.
 
In the top of the eighth the Owls bats continued to come to life. With one out, Lindy Wilson singled and then stole second base. Wilson advanced to third on an Emma Walker single. After a Walker stolen base, Burton singled home one putting the Owls ahead, 6-5. WWU added another run on a fielders' choice and the game went to the bottom of the eighth with the Owls leading 7-5.
 
Waskow walked the first batter of the inning but got Jillian Saiza to line out and Morgan Moczygemba was out returning to first base. Waskow retired the next hitter on a fly out to left and WWU won game one, 7-5.

After closing out game one with hits, the Owls opened game two by scoring early. With two outs in the first inning, the Owls got a two our rally started. Emily Robinett reached on a walk and Amanda Bouchey followed with a single. Massey reached on an error which scored one putting the Owls ahead 1-0. WWU added one more in the inning on a Burton single and the Owls led 2-0 after the top of the first inning.
 
Waskow kept the Mariners hitters quick opening the contest as she sat down Marymount California in order in the first and allowed a two out hit in the second before retiring the next batter. The Mariners scored one run in the bottom of the third inning. With a runner on second, Cierra Kessler collected an RBI single and the Owls lead was down to 2-1.
 
The Owls grew its lead in the top of the fourth inning. With runners on the corners, Lindsay Van Tres singled scoring one and extending the Owls lead to 3-1. WWU grew the lead to 5-1 after a two run RBI single by Robinett and WWU led 5-1 heading to the bottom of the fourth.
 
Marymount California tired to answer back in the bottom of the fourth. With one on and two outs, the Mariners got back to back hits before the Owls got the out without a runner scoring.
 
The game remained 5-1 in favor of the Owls until the top of the seventh inning. WWU scored a run on a Mariners error and grew its lead to 6-1.
 
William Woods had three outs to go for the victory, but they would run into trouble. The Mariners scored on run on a Owls error cutting the lead down to 6-2. Amanda Guillen drove in two on a double to left and the Owls lead was down to two, 6-4. The Mariners scored one more in the inning but Waskow did not allow them to tie the game and WWU came away with a 6-5 victory.
