Women’s Tennis Defeats No. 22 Coastal Georgia and No. 14 Middle Georgia State

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The William Woods University women's tennis team, presented by Fulton Medical Center, came away with two victories over ranked teams. WWU opened the day with a victory over No. 22 College of Coastal Georgia, 5-0. The Owls closed out the day with a 5-1 victory over No. 14 Middle Georgia State University.
 
The Owls return to action tomorrow, Thursday, March 8th when they face Eastern Nazarene College and Methodist University in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
 
Coastal Georgia (WWU 5-0 victory)
The Owls opened its match with the Marines and took all three double points. Ana Zavala and Zlata Shuraeva won 8-1 claiming the first point. Felicia Cesar and Chelsea Steward followed with an 8-2 victory. In no. 3 doubles, Julia Mulder and Abigail Lemberger won 8-2 taking the finals double point.

WWU only needed two more points to clinch the match. Julia Mulder put WWU ahead 4-0 when she took No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Ana Zavala clinched the match for the Owls with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Paige DeLaPerriere in No. 4 singles action.

In doubles action WWU took No. 2 doubles. The team of Zlata Shuraeva and Ana Zavala won 8-0. After dropping No. 1 doubles, the Owls came back and took No. 3 doubles as Chelsea Steward and Felicia Cesar won 8-5.
 
WWU needed three points heading to singles actions and WWU took a 3-1 lead after Chelsea Steward defeated Lara Persianai, 6-2, 7-5, in No. 6 singles. Zlata Shuraeva came away with the fourth point of the day for the Owls. She won No. 1 singles, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 over Preeti Gokhale.
 
William Woods claimed the match when Julia Perez Wienese won No. 2 doubles. She defeated Laura Cocoma, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, clinching the match for the Owls.
