COSTA MESA, Calif. – The William Woods University softball team closed out its 2018 spring break trip by being swept by No. 17 Vanguard University on Thursday afternoon. The Owls were shutout in both games as the Lions took game one, 7-0, and game two, 8-0.

The Owls return to action on Tuesday, March 13th when they travel to Columbia, Missouri to open American Midwest Conference action against Stephens College. First-pitch is set for 3 p.m.

Game One
Game Flow
WWU came out and picked up a hit on the second batter of the game when
Dacrie Depping got one of three hits for the Owls. However, they would not get another hit in the inning.

The Lions came out swinging as they led off with a single in the bottom of the first. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third. She came into score on a sacrifice fly from Payton Ross. That would be all the Lions would in the inning and Vanguard led 1-0 after the first inning. Â

WWU picked up its second hit of the game in the top of the second inning but could not get anything else going.

The Lions scored again after the Owls were unable to string any hits together in the top of the second. With runners on second and third, Emily Hall picked up its second sacrifice fly of the contest and grew its lead to 2-0.

William Woods picked up its third hit of the game when
Lindy Wilson singled to lead off the third. She was the only hit in the inning as the next three Owls were retired.

Vanessa Dwyer continued to keep the Owls bats quiet after the third inning as the Owls did not pick up another hit in the game.

Vanguard added to the lead it the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings. They scored one run in the fifth and then added four more taking a 7-0 lead. WWU had no answer and would fall 7-0 in game one of the doubleheader.

The Owls and Lions went scoreless in the first and the Lions would be the ones to score in the bottom of the second. With runners on second and third, Morgan Pilbin followed with a single up the middle scoring the first run of the contest and putting the Lions ahead, 1-0.

Bri Devellano tried to spark the Owls offense in the top of the third when she hit a leadoff double and was later able to advance on a sacrifcie bunt. The Owls were unable to string any hits together as they left one stranded.

The Lions knocked in five in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to six, 6-0. Vanguard had four hits and took advantage of one Owls error in the contest.

Emily Robinett singled to lead off the top of the fourth inning after a fielder's choice and a pop out,
Celeste Sermeno singled putting two runners on base for the Owls. However, the Owls could not get another hit and trailed 6-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth.

Vanguard added one more run in the bottom of the forth when Kaitlin Estes drove in one on a double to left field.

WWU could not string anything going in the top of the fifth inning. The Owls could not allow the Lions to score in the bottom of the fifth to keep the game alive. However, Ross singled home one and ended the game with the mercy rule by the score of 8-0.
