FULTON, Mo. – Returning to the court for the first time since March 18th, the William Woods University men's tennis team, sponsored by Fulton Medical Center, defeated NCAA Division II Maryville University, 5-4, on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win the Owls improve to 7-5 on the season. Full results can be found below.
"Guys came out with a lot of energy against a tough Maryville team," remarked Head Coach
Justin Stuckey. "I was really pleased with our toughness today. We will need to keep this up for the rest of the season."
The Owls jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead the Saints.
Christian Barbieri and
Stefan Simic came away with the first point for the Owls with an 8-4 victory in No. 3 doubles. Teammates,
Javier Callejo and
Christopher Vleeming Ortiz followed with an 8-4 win in No. 1 doubles. However, the Saints came away with the final point in doubles as they took No. 2 doubles, 8-3.
The Owls took the first point in singles when
Oscar Barreiro won No. 4 singles. No. 4 singles were tied 1-1 before Barreiro won as his opponent retired.
Leading 3-1, the Saints came back and won No. 3 singles. WWU jumped up to a 4-2 lead after
Javier Callejo won in No. 2 singles. He wont 6-1, 7-5, putting the Owls one match away from winning.
However, the Owls dropped the next two matches in No. 5 and No. 1 singles and the match was tied at 4-4 heading to the final match, No. 6 singles. In No. 6 singles,
Nathan Cooke gave the Owls the win as he won 7-6, 7-6, clinching the final point.
WWU returns to action on Thursday, April 12th when they travel to Topeka, Kansas to face Washburn University in non-conference action. The match starts at 1 p.m.
