Men’s Tennis Wins Back-to-Back Conference Titles

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The William Woods University men's tennis team, sponsored by Fulton Medical Center, won its second straight AMC/Heart of America Unaffiliated Group Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the win the Owls improve to 14-6 on the season. With the win of the tournament, the Owls have clinched an automatic berth to the NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship in Mobile, Alabama. Nationals will start on May 15th and run through May 19th.

"The guys really played well," remarked head coach Justin Stuckey. "The energy and passion they played with and support was all extremely high. We really needed everyone on the team as we played almost everyone on the team this weekend in matches. I know the guys will enjoy this win for now and are excited to start preparing for the national championships."
 
In doubles action, the Owls took two of the three points. During the match, the Owls trailed in every doubles match. Coming from behind Oscar Barreiro and Benjamin Tzschentke won 8-6 after trailing 5-4. Javier Callejo and Christopher Vleeming Ortiz came back to win 8-6.
 
In No. 2 doubles, the Owls team of Sefan Simic and Jesus Amezcua came back and forced a tiebreaker. The Vikings had set point twice on the Owls but Simic and Zmezcua continued to battle. However, they came up just short and the Owls led 2-1 after doubles.
 
The Owls need three points to win in singles and they came through. Getting the Owls its third point was Javier Callejo in No. 1 singles. He defeated Abdul Alhamzawi 6-1, 6-0.
 
The Owls had four other players with a set win in the match, but Jesus Amezcua was the next to finish. In No. 4 singles, he won 6-2, 6-1, over Marc Kerndl Clinching the match for the Owls was Christopher Vleeming Ortiz in No. 2 singles. Vleeming Ortiz came away with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
 
The Owls return to action on May 15th at the NAIA National Championships. They will have to wait to see who they will play.
