LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – William Woods University Men's Soccer team captured their second win of the season defeating the University of St. Mary (Kan.) Spires, 4-0. The Owls have won two in a row now bringing them to 2-2 on the season.
The Owls had seven players record shots in the contest, led by
Darren Wilson with four.
Wessel Albers followed with three shots. WWU had four players score a goal in the contest; Wilson,
Jon Buerge,
David Marshall and
Spencer Hiles.
WWU returns to action on Saturday, September 1st when they travel to Chicago, Illinois to face Robert Morris University. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Game Flow
The Owls opened the first half with aggressive play. Six minutes into the game
Jon Buerge attempted a shot on goal that would be saved by St. Mary's Blake Kuehl. Three minutes after Buerge's attempt,
Darren Wilson looked to put the Owls on the board with a shot on goal that was also saved by Kuehl.
Midway through the first half,
Darren Wilson found the back of the net for the first goal of the game.
Yamac Aytekin found Wilson giving the Owls a 1-0 advantage over St. Mary.
As first half action continued, William Woods turned up the aggression. Less than a minute and a half from his first goal, Buerge scored making the score 2-0 in favor of the Owls.
With 9:11 remaining on the game clock,
David Marshall would score the final goal of the half. After the Spires were called for a foul in the box, Marshall took the penalty kick and scored, giving the Owls a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
After a strong first half, William Woods continued the aggression with back-to-back shots from Wilson and
Wessel Albers opening the second half. Wilson's shot was saved while Albers shot missed wide of the goal.
Saint Mary's Jay Willcutt recorded the only shot for the Spires coming midway through the second half.
The Owls would go on to defeat the Spires 4-0 with a late second half goal coming from
Spencer Hiles.
