Women’s Soccer Blanks Sterling; Lauren Robb Picks Up First Win

FULTON, Mo. – For the first time of her career, head coach Lauren Robb was able to capture her first win as the William Woods University women's soccer team defeated Sterling College, 4-0. The Owls had three players score a goal in the contest.

WWU outshot Sterling 25-7 in the contest and 11-1 on shots on goal. McKenzie Gourley, Shelby Wiebe and Shelby Scanlan all scored goals in the contest. William Woods also had seven players record shots on the night.

The Owls return to Firley Field Monday, September 3rd has they face Southwestern Christian University in a non-conference contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Game Flow
Both teams began the contest with goals on their mind. A quick shot from WWU's Scanlan was saved by Warriors goalkeeper Ashtan Jackson. Shortly after Scanlan's attempt, Aurora Henriksen shot attempted missed wide of the goal.
 
Sterling would look to make their own attack when Brianna Dorsey had her shot miss wide of the goal. William Woods would continue their aggression with their next two shots coming 35 seconds apart. With 25:45 on the game clock, Henriksen's shot attempt would miss high over the goal, while Claire Stark's shot also missed high of the goal ten seconds later.
 
The Owls would keep possession of the ball most of the half. McKenzie Gourley would miss wide of the goal with 18:49 remaining in the first period but would redeem herself by finding the back of the net for the first goal of the game with 16 minutes remaining.
 
The Warriors would look to find attack points but would fall short as they Owls were locked in on defense. With 1:51 left in the half, McKenzie Gourley's assist led to a Shelby Wiebe goal giving the Owls a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
 
With second half action underway, William Woods continued the first half momentum. With less than five minutes off the clock, Stark attempted another shot that would be blocked by Sterling's Alejandra Mendez.
 
The Warriors struggled finding the net only recording one shot coming from Mendez.
 
Strong play came from Henriksen as she had back-to-back shot attempts both missing high of the goal. Midway through the second half, Scanlan was able to find the net on an assist from Wiebe giving the Owls a 3-0 lead.
 
The Warriors had few opportunities to make a comeback but would no capitalize. As regulation came to an end, Scanlan broke out a found the net for the second time of the night pushing the lead to 4-0.
Sterling College had a few more chances to advance the ball up field, but the Owls aggression was just to much.
