FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's soccer team captured their second straight win as they shutout Southwestern Christian University 3-0 on Monday afternoon. The Owls recorded their second shutout of the season.
WWU held SCU to only seven shots in the match.
Shelby Scanlan,
Shelby Wiebe and
Colleen Bayer had goals for the Owls. WWU outshot the Eagles 27-11 in the match and 15-7 on goal.
The Owls return to action on Saturday, September 8th when they host Benedictine College. Benedictine came into the NAIA as the No. 2 team in the nation. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
Game Flow
William Woods looked to score early. With four minutes off the game clock,
Abby Prather-Turner attempted a shot that was saved by SCU's Jordyn Howle. The Eagles would make their own push with a shot from Nathally Lopez that missed high of the goal.
At the 32:41 mark,
Shelby Scanlan recorded a tackle and took the ball from the Eagles and had a breakout. She would be the Eagles goalie giving WWU a 1-0 lead. WWU's would continue looking for the net as
Rosemary Lenz shot attempt was blocked by Taylor Forsythe three minutes after the Owl goal.
Southwestern Christian would not back down. Ashlynn Breedlove found an open hole and attempted a shot, but the fierce defense from William Woods goalkeeper
Taylor Hoeltke would deny any chances of an Eagles goal. Still fighting, Eagles Kaitlyn Carroll would attempt a shot that missed wide of the goal.
Immediately following SCU's attempt,
Shelby Wiebe broke free and scored the second goal for the Owls moving the lead to 2-0, which would be the lead the Owls would take into halftime.
Southwestern could not find a rhythm the first half. William Woods would outshoot the Eagles 12-4 during the first half of regulation.
The Eagles would start the second half very aggressive. A quick shot Breedlove would be saved by Hoeltke. WWU would retaliate with a shot from Wiebe coming four minutes after. Determined to put Southwestern on the board, Breedlove attempted another shot that was again saved by Hoeltke.
SCU had a three-minute span where it seemed they were going to find the net. With 30:55 remaining on the clock, Emily Anderson attempted a shot that missed wide of the goal. Following that Eagles attempt was Breedlove, who's shot attempt led to a Millie Templeman attempt that were both saved by Hoeltke.
Finally, midway through the second half,
Aurora Henriksen found Collen Bayer for the third and final goal for the Owls. This would put the Owls ahead 3-0.
The Eagles would have a few more opportunities to score but would be denied by the William Woods defense. WWU came away with its second straight shutout and fourth win in a row against Southwestern Christian.
