FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's soccer team opened AMC play Tuesday night with a 1-1 double overtime draw to Missouri Baptist University. WWU moves to (2-4-1, 0-0-1 AMC) on the season while Missouri Baptist goes to (0-4-2, 0-0-1 AMC).
Shelby Scanlan recorded her 35th career goal on an assist from
McKenzie Gourley. Scanlan goal came late in the second half and tied the match 1-1. The Owls out shot Missouri Baptist 28-10 and 15-3 shots on goal.
William Woods travels to Batesville, Ark. Saturday, September 15th as they face conference opponent Lyon College. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
Game Flow
Missouri Baptist (MBU) were the first to attack in the match. Two minutes into the game, Riley Janvrin attempted a shot that was blocked by WWU's
Samantha Donaldson. Following MBU's attack,
Claire Stark broke out for a shot attempted that went wide of the goal.
William Woods continued to attack when,
Abby Prather-Turner's shot attempt went wide of goal four minutes after Starks shot. The Owls were the aggressors the entire first half. Midway through,
Shelby Scanlan had a shot attempt that went wide of the goal. Exactly one minute after,
McKenzie Gourley attempted a shot that also went wide of the goal. With 23:46 on the clock, the Owls were in perfect scoring position. Scanlan beat the goalkeeper and attempted a shot that hit the goal post and left the score tied 0-0.
As the first half continued, Gourley had back-to-back shot attempts coming three minutes apart. Her first shot was saved by Jemica Artillaga and the second attempted went wide of the goal. Determined to score, Scanlan broke free for another shot attempt that hit the crossbar.
Alexis Ramey attempted the final shot for Missouri Baptist, but the quick hands of
Taylor Hoeltke denied the Spartans chance of scoring. Two minutes until halftime
Samantha Donaldson attempted a shot but was saved by Artillaga and both teams walked into halftime scoreless.
The Owls returned from the locker room very aggressive.
Shelby Wiebe attempted an early shot for the Owls but was saved by Artillaga. Four minutes into the half, Stark looked to find the net, but her shot would go high of the goal. Twenty seconds later,
Colleen Bayer attempted a shot, but it was Artillaga that was there for the save. Artillaga ended the night with six saves.
After disappearing most of the match, Missouri Baptist found some life when Miranda Pratt beat
Taylor Hoeltke for the first goal of the game giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
WWU will continue to find the net, but they could not find a way to get past the Spartans defense. Finally, with four minutes remaining in the match, Gourley found Scanlan down the middle for a goal tying the game 1-1. Neither team would score again and the game went to overtime.
During the first overtime, William Woods were the first to attack. With two minutes off the clock, Gourley attempted a shot but Jackie Hagan would be there for the block. MBU would look to put the game away when Pratt's shot attempted went wide of the goal.
WWU kept pushing as Gourley attempted another shot that was saved by Brooklyn Hamman. In the last minute of overtime, Stark attempted a shot that went wide of the goal and sent the match into double overtime.
The Owls seemed to be the aggressors during double overtime only allowing MBU one shot. Stark and Donaldson both had shot attempts that were blocked by Hamman. Scanlan's final shot attempt was blocked by Hailey Hickerson. Neither team could come away with a goal and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
