Women’s Soccer Falls Late to Lyon

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The William Woods University women's soccer played their second conference match of the 2018 season against Lyon College. The Owls fell to the Scots 1-0 as Lyon scored late in the contest to earn the victory over the Owls.
 
The Owls (2-5-1, 0-1-1 AMC) outshot Lyon 20-8 and 7-2 shots on goal. William Woods had 10 players record shots on the night.  Shelby Scanlan led the Owls with five shots while Rachel Humble followed with three shots of her own. Shelby Wiebe, McKenzie Gourley, Claire Stark and  Abby Prather-Turner each recorded two shots. Leah Bonugli, Brianna Morrow, Samantha Donaldson and Colleen Bayer all attempted one shot apiece.
 
WWU returns to action Sept. 17th as they travel to Henderson, Tenn. to face Freed-Hardeman University. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
 
Game Flow
William Woods looked to get an early lead as Colleen Bayer had a shot attempt that missed high of the goal. Two minutes after, Claire Stark broke free for a shot attempt that went wide. With 37:43 in the first half, Shelby Wiebe almost put WWU on the board, but her attempt would be saved by Scots goalie Oliva Wolfram. That would not stop Wiebe's determination as she attempted another shot a minute after but would miss high of the goal.
 
The Owls were the aggressors midway through the first half, a shot coming from Samantha Donaldson seemed all but in, but was saved by the quick reaction from Wolfram.  After going wide in her first attempt, Stark had another opportunity to score but again missed wide of the goal.
 
Finally, with 28 minutes remaining in the half, Sarah Evans broke free for the Scots first attempt but it would miss wide and keep the score tied 0-0. Immediately following the Evans attempt, Alexandria Denton found herself in scoring position, but her shot would be saved by the fast hands of Taylor Hoeltke.
 
Both teams would could not find away to score in the first half. WWU would make a finally push with an attempt coming from Abby Prather-Turner that was blocked and another attempt coming from Shelby Scanlan that missed high of the goal. Lyon would not look to score, and the game would be tied 0-0 going into halftime.
 
Entering the second half, Rachel Humble found room an attempted her first shot of the game which bounced off the post. Looking to put the first points on the board, Barboso looked to score for the Scots in an attempt that was blocked by WWU's Brianna Morrow. Lyon kept the pressure coming early as Evans attempted another shot but was blocked by Lexi Rosa.
 
Twelve minutes into the second half, Morrow looked to score for the Owls, but her shot would be blocked by Menthe Steensma. William Woods had multiple opportunities to put points on the board. A shot by McKenzie Gurley went wide of the goal which lead to a Rachel Humble attempt that was blocked by Edith Flores.
 
The Scots would not attempt another shot for another 10 minutes. Back-to-back shots from Humble and Scanlan were both close to scoring but Wolfram's defense denied any thought of a goal being scored.
 
Finally, with eight minutes left in the game, Judith Flores found her way to a goal and put the Scots ahead 1-0.
 
With time not on their side, WWU needed to make something happen quickly. Gourley looked to be the spark the Owls needed with a shot on goal that was blocked by Elena Cervantes. This would be the final attempt for both teams and the Scots would walk away with a 1-0 victory.
