BATESVILLE, Ark. – The William Woods University men's soccer team earned its second straight 1-0 shutout as they defeated Lyon College on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Owls stretched its unbeaten streak to seven games.
Darren Wilson scored the game wining goal on a penalty kick in the first half of the contest. WWU was outshot 9-5 in the match.
WWU returns to action on Monday, Sept. 17th when they travel to Henderson, Tenn. to face Freed-Hardeman University. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
Game Flow
Both teams struggled early in the contest getting the offense going as neither team attempted a shot over first eight minutes of the game. After Lyon was called for a foul in the box,
Billy Nzojyibwami had a penalty kick that was saved by Gianni Santin.
After the penalty kick, the Scots had its first shot go high of goal. Less than a minute later, the Owls countered and
Victor Faure had a shot attempt that was saved by Santin. Following Faure's shot, neither team had a shot attempt for five minutes.
With just over 27 minutes to go in the first half, the Owls were called for a foul in the box and Emanuel Santos had a penalty kick. Santos shot was saved by
Ben Faherty, keeping the game scoreless.
With just under nine minutes left in the first half, the Owls drew another foul in the box and had its second penalty kick of the game. This time
Darren Wilson took the kick and scored putting the Owls ahead, 1-0.
William Woods had one more scoring chance in the contest as
Alberto Pitarch had a shot on goal that was saved by Santin. WWU took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Scots had the first scoring chance in the second half as Rafael Santos had a shot that
Ben Faherty saved keeping the Owls in front 1-0. Following Santos shot, neither team had a shot attempt for nine minutes when Santos had a shot blocked by Pitarch.
WWU looked to grow its lead as Faure had a shot sail high of goal with just under 24 minutes remaining in the game. Following Faure's shot, the Owls did not attempt another shot in the contest.
Lyon ended the game with all the offensive momentum in the game. With 14 minutes remaining Estiven Garcia had a shot go wide of goal. The Scots kept up the pressure on the Owls defense as they had six corner kicks over the final six minutes of the game, but the Owls did not allow the Scots to score. WWU came way with a 1-0 victory, its second straight and grew its unbeaten streak to seven games.
