HENDERSON, Tenn. – The William Woods University men's soccer team captured their third straight win Monday night as they defeated Freed-Hardeman University 3-2 in double overtime. The Owls move to 6-2-2 and 3-0 in AMC play.
The Owls outshot the Lions 26-9 and 12-4 with shots being on goal. The Owls had eight players record shots in the contest.
Darren Wilson led WWU with eight shot attempts, while
Billy Nzojyibwami followed with four.
Darren Wilson scored the game winning goal for the Owls in the double overtime. With the win the Owls unbeaten streak improved to eight games.
WWU returns to action Saturday, September 22nd as they host conference opponent St. Louis Pharmacy. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Firley Field.
Game Flow
Freed-Hardeman opened the match looking to start things early. With a little under five minutes off the clock, Andrij Sawczuk found Carter Chandler for a goal and gave the Lions a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later, Sawczuk recorded his second assist when he found Kenneth Ramirez for a goal and pushed the lead to 2-0. William Woods tried to come up with a goal of their own when
Darren Wilson attempted a shot that missed wide of the goal.
The Owls would continue searching for their first goal of the first half as Wilson attempted his second shot of the night that was saved by Calum Langdale. Following Wilson's shot,
Victor Faure attempted a shot that missed wide of the goal.
WWU struggled finding the goal early on but found the net midway through the half as
David Marshall saw
Billy Nzojyibwami in open field for a goal and putting the Owls on the board. After Nzojyibawami goal, the Owls trailed 2-1.
Trailing 2-1, William Woods kept their aggression. At the 12 minutes mark,
Darren Wilson attempted a shot that missed wide of the goal. Immediately after Wilson's shot,
Yamac Aytekin attempted a shot that was denied by Clay Lindsay. The Lions disappeared after scoring two early goals as they did not record a shot the remainder of the first half.
In the final 5 minutes, Nzojyibwami just about found the goal for the Owls but the defense of Lions goalkeeper Calum Langdale denied any thoughts of a Owls goal and Freed-Hardeman walked into halftime a head 2-1.
The second half got off to a slow start. Neither team could find away to get something going. Finally, with just over 10 minutes into the half, Marshall attempted a shot for the Owls but missed high of the goal. Freed-Hardeman looked to make a push as Sawczuk broke free for an attempted that also went high of the goal.
As time ran off the clock the Owls were able to put a quick game plan together and get back into the game. With four minutes left in the game, Marshall found room and tied the game 2-2.
The Lions quickly responded as Lindsay almost ended the game but was denied by
Ben Faherty.
Darren Wilson would attempt one more shot to give the Owls the win, but his shot would be saved by Langdale. And the game would head to overtime tied at 2-2.
William Woods were the aggressors in the first overtime. Midway through, Wilson attempted a shot that was saved by Langdale in first four minutes of the overtime period. In the finally five minutes, Wilson attempted another shot that missed wide of the goal. The Lions did not have any opportunities to score and would end the first overtime with zero shots recorded.
Double overtime began the same as the first overtime. WWU kept the aggression while Freed-Hardeman disappeared. With 7:49 on the clock, Wilson was able to score the game winning goal on a penalty kicked and William Woods walked away with a 3-2 victory.
