HENDERSON, Tenn. – The William Woods University women's soccer team (3-5-1, 1-1-1 AMC) scored a season high five goals, as they defeated conference opponent Freed-Hardeman University, 5-2 Monday night.
Abby Prather-Turner and
Aurora Henriksen lead the Owls with two goals each on the night.
Shelby Scanlan recorded a goal on the night. William Woods outshot Freed-Hardeman 18-14 and 8-4 on shots being on goal.
The Owls return to action on Saturday, September 17th as they host St. Louis Pharmacy. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Firley Field.
Game Flow
Freed-Hardeman started the match in full attack mode. With three minutes into the first half Abbey Redferrin found Hannah Bilger for a goal and quickly took a 1-0 lead.
Samantha Donaldson looked to respond for the Owls on a shot of her own that missed wide of the goal. A minute after Donaldson's attempt,
Abby Prather-Turner just about tied the game but was denied by Lions goalkeeper Holley Moore.
At the midway point,
Claire Stark was able to find Prather-Turner for a goal and tied the game 1-1. The Lions had opportunities to gain the lead but could not capitalize on any chances. With 28:28 remaining in the first half,
Shelby Scanlan broke free for a goal and put WWU ahead 2-1.
Chloe Finney looked to respond with a shot of her own that missed wide of the goal. William Woods continued the aggressive play. At the 16-minute mark, Prather-Turner attempted another shot that went wide of the goal.
In the final 10 minutes of the first half, Prather-Turner broke free for her second goal of the night giving William Woods a 3-1 lead. With momentum picking up for the Owls the determination for a goal was high.
Rachel Humble attempted a shot that hit high off the crossbar which lead to a
Aurora Henriksen goal and gave WWU a 4-1 lead going into halftime.
Freed-Hardeman opened the second half confident and determined to make a comeback. Van Kampen looked to attack for the Lions on a shot attempt that missed wide of the goal. Following Kampen's attempt was Bilger who had an attempted of her that also missed wide of the goal. Struggling to find a goal Nele Kirsch came close for Freed-Hardeman as her shot hit high off the crossbar keeping the score 4-1 in the Owls favor.
Ten minutes into the second half WWU continued the push. At the 35:24 mark, Humble found
Aurora Henriksen for the fifth goal of the game moving the Owls lead to 5-1.
The Lions continued to make a push but could not find a way to score. Late in the second half, the Lions looked as if they were going to score their second goal when Abbey Redferrin broke free for a shot attempt that was saved by
Abbey West.
Collen Bayer looked to add to the Owls lead with a shot attempt that was saved by Erin Douglass.
In the final 55 seconds of the match, McCall Decker found Hannah Bilger for the Lions second goal of the game. The Owls won the contest 5-2 over the Lions for its first AMC win of the season.
