Volleyball Wins Sixth Straight; Sweep Lyon

BATESVILLE, Ark. – In a rematch of an AMC Championship quarterfinals matchup from last year, the William Woods University volleyball team swept Lyon College, 3-0 (25-23, 30-28, 25-17) on Friday night in AMC action.
 
As a team, the Owls had an attack percentage of .298 for the match, including hitting. 357 in the third set. WWU tallied nine blocks as a team and had two players, Tory Wiley and Jaclyn Zahn, with ten kills each. WWU recorded four aces in the match.
 
The Owls return to action on Saturday, Sept. 22nd when they play at Central Baptist College in Conway, Ark. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
 
Game Flow
In the first set the Scots came out and took an early lead over the Owls as they had a 5-2 lead after a WWU attack error. WWU answered right back and tied the set at 5-5 after a Scots attack error. The first set went back and forth and with the match tied at 10-10, WWU scored the next three points taking a three-point lead. The lead would not get any bigger and the set would be tied at 19-19 a few minutes later. Following the tie, WWU scored five straight points, which was keyed by Jaclyn Zahn kills. WWU took set one, 25-23 taking a 1-0 match lead.
 
In a highly contested second set, neither team could pull away and after a kill by Tory Wiley, WWU tied the set at 6-6. After trading points and seeing the match tied at 8-8, The Owls scored the next two points on Lyon attack errors. However, the Owls could not build on the lead as the Scots tied the game a few points later. With the match tied at 14-14, WWU rallied off three straight points on three straight kills by Wiley. Again, the Scots answered tying the match again. The set would be tied nine more times and a kill by Brooke Reed gave the Owls a 29-28 lead. WWU clinched the second set after a Scot attack error. WWU took set two, 30-28.
 
The Owls jumped all over the Scots opening the third set of the match as the Owls scored five of the first six points. During that stretch Kate Doerhoff and Wiley had two kills each along with an ace by Rayleen Rivera. A kill by Kendra Kelley put the Scots down four, 14-10. Quietly, the Owls stretched its lead back to seven points, 19-12, after another Doerhoff kill. WWU stretched its lead to nine, 23-14, after a Doerhoff kill. Needing two point to clinch the match, the Scots scored three straight points before a kill by Doerhoff got the Owls back on track. Kayton Coffee sealed the win for the Owls with an ace to end the match. WWU took the third set, 25-17 and the match 3-0.
