Men's Soccer Rallies to Draw Hannibal-LaGrange

HANNIBAL, Mo. – Trailing 2-1 in the final minute of the contest, the William Woods University tied the game with 24 seconds left forcing overtime against Hannibal-LaGrange University. The Owls and Trojans played to a 2-2 double overtime draw in the AMC Men's Soccer game of the Week.
 
WWU outshot Hannibal 17-11 and 8-4 on shots on goal. AMC Player of the Week, Billy Nzojyibwami led the Owls with 6 shot attempts. David Marshall followed with 4 of his own.
 
The Owls return to action on Oct. 6th when they host Central Baptist. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Firley Field.
 
Game Flow
Five minutes into the match, Vincente Rubina of Hannibal-LaGrange attempted a shot that missed wide of the goal.
 
Following the Trojans shot, Jon Buerge deflected a ball into the box that Billy Nzojyibwami ran onto and Nzojyibwami scored giving the Owls a 1-0 lead.
 
Midway through the first half, Wincius Paiva Pessoa attempted to tie the game but would hit high off the post and keep WWU ahead. With 23:45 remaining on the game clock in the first half, the Owls were called for a foul in the box and the Trojans had a penalty kick. Hugo Lopez was able to find the net on a penalty kick and tie the game 1-1. 
 
Nzojyibwami looked to find the back of the net on an attempt but would miss wide of the goal and keep the game tied 1-1.  The Owls continued to find ways to gain the lead. Logan Christopher was able to break free and attempt to put WWU ahead, but his shot was blocked by Philip Kamletz.
 
The Owls would attempt two more times in the half but would come up short on both and the two teams headed into halftime tied at 1-1.
 
Entering the second half, William Woods had the first shot attempt. Three minutes in, Nzojyibwami just about put the Owls up but was denied when he shot attempt was saved by Trojans goalkeeper Micah Thompson. That did not stop WWU, as a few minutes after his attempt was saved, Nzojyibwami attempted another shot, this time missing off the post which led to a David Marshall shot that missed wide of the goal.
 
The aggression began to pick up for the WWU, Hannibal-LaGrange needed a spark to get their spirits back into the game. A little after the midway mark, Hugo Lopez attempted a shot on goal that was saved by Iker Gonzalez and kept the game tied 1-1.
 
Finally, after 25 scoreless minutes, Cory Allensworth found Martin Gutierrez for the Trojans second goal and put them ahead 2-1.
 
The Owls needed to find a way to score quickly as time was running out and the game was under a minute left.  Alberto Pitarch found Logan Christopher who sent the ball in and David Marshall headed the ball home tying the game at 2-2 with 24 seconds left in the regulation. The game would end up going to overtime.
 
In the first overtime, William Woods was the obvious aggressors.  Thirty seconds in, Zachary Baliva attempted a shot that missed wide of the goal. Nzojyibwami also attempted a shot but would be blocked by Santiago Diaz. In the final seconds of the first overtime, Darren Wilson attempted to score on a penalty kick, but his shot was saved by Thompson. After going shot-less for 9 minutes, the Trojans Issac Lehmkul attempted a shot on goal that was saved by Gonzalez.
 
Hannibal entered double overtime determined to score a goal. Diaz, Lehmkul, and Allensworth all attempted shots but could not connect on any. WWU did not record a shot in double overtime and the game would end in a 2-2 draw.
