Women’s Soccer Uses Overtime to Down Hannibal-LaGrange

HANNIBAL, Mo. – The William Woods University women's soccer team battled back and tied the game early in the second and followed scoring in extra time to defeat the Trojans of Hannibal-LaGrange University, 3-2, on Tuesday evening.
 
With just under two minutes to go in overtime, Henriksen scored giving the Owls (5-5-1, 3-2-1 AMC) a 3-2 victory. The Owls had three players score a goal in the contest and outshot the Trojans (1-8, 0-4 AMC) in the contest, 25-17.
 
The Owls returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 3rd when they host Stephens College in AMC action. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
 
Game Flow
The Owls looked to score early in the contest against the Trojans. Following a corner kick, Aurora Henriksen fired a shot on goal, however, she hit the post keeping the game scoreless. Over the next five minutes, the Owls Shelby Scanlan and McKenzie Gourley had shots on goal, but the shots were saved by Madi Allen.
 
Following the three shots of the Owls, it was now the Trojans chance to score. Kendal Welch had two shots on goal in a 30-second timeframe. Both her shots were stopped by Owls goalie, Taylor Hoeltke. However, 40 seconds after the second shot by Welch, she found Maci Cotler who scored the first goal of the game and the Trojans led 1-0.
 
Coming off a three-goal performance on Saturday, Colleen Bayer looked to keep the momentum going and tie the game at 1-1 in the first half. She had her first shot attempt of the game, with 33:05 left in the first half, saved by the Trojans keeper.
 
Colter continued to pressure the Owls defense as she had a shot that went off the post.
 
WWU answered back when Claire Stark scored with 31:22 left in the half tying the game at 1-1. Stark found a loose ball and went and finished the goal.
 
The Trojans kept the offensive pressure on the Owls as they had two shot attempts within two minutes of the Owls goal. With just under 29 minutes left in the half, Welch took a corner kick and found Colter, who headed in the ball putting the Trojans ahead, 2-1, which would be the halftime score.
 
Hannibal-LaGrange kept the pressure up in the second half as they had three shots in the first three minutes go wide of goal. Following those attempts, Stark had a shot that Allen saved keeping the Trojans ahead 2-1. The Owls tied the game with 39:18 left in regulation when Shelby Wiebe found Scanlan for a goal.
 
With the game tied 2-2, the offenses could not put a shot on target. Over the next 20 minutes of the game, seven of the next nine shots would be wide or high of the goal. The Trojans had the only two shots that were on target as Welch and Skylar Evans had shots that were saved by the Owls keeper.
 
Following Scanlan's goal, the Owls or Trojans could not score another goal regulation and the game would score into overtime tied at 2-2.
 
The Owls came out and were the only team to have a shot in overtime. The first shot attempt came by Samantha Donaldson, whose shot went off the post. Following her shot, Lexi Rosa had a shot that went wide of goal. Running out of time in the first overtime, the Owls Gourley found Henriksen who scored winning the game for the Owls. WWU defeated the Trojans, 3-2.
