COLUMBIA, Mo. – The William Woods University women's soccer team saw its winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon as the Owls were defeated by No. 3 Benedictine College, 4-0, at Battle High School.
The game was moved Battle High School because of field conditions. The Owls and Ravens played to a first half scoreless draw, but the No. 3 Ravens were too much as they scored four second half goals to win the contest.
WWU returns to action on Tuesday, September 11th when they host Missouri Baptist University in American Midwest Conference action. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
Game Flow
The Owls had the first shot of the game as
Claire Stark took a shot that went wide of goal. Following her shot, Emily Ambuul had a shot go wide, Anna Romano had a shot go off the post and then Nicole Kelly had a shot that was saved by
Taylor Hoeltke keeping the game scoreless.
Benedictine's offense continued to get the unlucky breaks in the game as Ramano had a shot saved and 45 seconds later, Olivia Meyers put one off the post. Over the next two minutes, the Ravens had three shots that Hoeltke saved.
The Ravens were not done hitting the post as Sydney Routh became the third different Benedictine player to hit the post in the first half. WWU had one more shot in the half as
Aurora Henriksen had a shot that was saved by the Ravens goalie. The game would go to halftime tied at 0-0.
Early in the second half, the Ravens scored its first goal of the game. On a corner kick, Olivia Meyers found Isabelle Wilhelm in the box. Wilhelm found Molly Schmidt who scored the first goal of the game three minutes into the second half.
The Ravens offense continued to attack as they had four more shots in a four-minute span. Two of the shots were on goal and Hoeltke made the saves. The Owls countered and
McKenzie Gourley had a shot that was saved.
Two minutes after Gourley's shot, the Ravens Nicole Kelly hit the cross bar on her shot. It bounced right to Abbie Hair who found the back of the next putting the Ravens ahead. 2-0. Five minutes later, the Ravens grew its lead to 3-0. After the Owls were called for a foul in the box, Emily Ambuul took the penalty kick and scored.
The Owls would get a few shots later in the contest but could not find a way to score. WWU found themselves down 4-0 after Emma Strecker found Ambuul for her second goal of the game.
WWU had three shots over the last ten minutes of the game with the first coming from Henriksen which was saved. Five minutes later,
Abby Prather-Turner had a shot go wide of goal. Gourley had the last scoring chance for the Owls put the shot was saved. WWU was defeated by No. 3 Benedictine, 4-0.
