BATESVILLE, Ark. – The William Woods University Men's Basketball team kicked off the new year with a conference win at Lyon College. The 66-61 win brings the Owls to 7-5 on the season with a 4-2 conference mark.
Aaron Brookins led the Owls scoring efforts with 19 points, hitting five from the three-point line.
Treshawn Gause added 15 while shooting 9-for-10 from the foul line.
The Owls play their second game of the new year on Saturday, Jan. 5, at Central Baptist College.
Game Flow
The Owls did not take possession of the game until seven minutes in, but the one-point lead did not hold for long. LC made a bucket just 20 seconds later to put the Scots back up.
After being fouled on the way up,
Treshawn Gause went 2-for-2 from the foul line to take back the lead for the Owls, 12-11. LC took out a four-point lead, and despite the Owls knotting the game up once more, the Owls went into halftime trailing by four, 28-24.
The second half started rough for the Owls as LC pushed an 11-point lead just over three minutes in, 40-29.
The Owls found their rhythm just shy of halfway through the second half, sparking a 14-0 run that spanned over five minutes long. At the end of the run, the Owls sat with a 52-47 lead with 5:53 on the clock.
Despite a four-point run from LC, the Owls refused to give up their lead. Following a traditional three-point play from
David Johnson Jr., the Owls held a six-point lead with 2:33 on the clock, 59-53.
LC cut the game to two with :30 on the board, but had to resort to fouling to stop the clock. The Owls went 3-for-4 from the foul line in the final seconds to secure the 66-61 win.
